Title:Standard for the Disposal of Digital Media (ID: CSD5707)
Topics:Data and Media Sanitization, Data Security
Source:University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Origin:Community Contributions (07/17/2008)
Type:Policies and Procedures
Abstract:

University policy requires that prior to transferring or disposing of digital media, said media/devices must be sanitized in order to ensure that no sensitive data is revealed to unauthorized/inappropriate parties. This standard provides a number of appropriate sanitization methods which will remove any sensitive data present on the digital media without requiring that unreasonable amounts of time be expended in sanitizing the media. In general digital media should be overwritten a minimum of once (1x) before being transferred between individuals or turned over to University Surplus.
