Is network bandwidth limited for peer-to-peer software, gaming, Web cams, or other programs requiring high levels of network services?
Campuses have become increasingly concerned about the impact of programs that consume significant amounts of their computer networks' capacity to move large files between individuals within the campus community and those coming into the network from external sources. These are often entertainment-based music, video, and game files. Their collective impact on a campus network can seriously degrade performance for legitimate academic and administrative computing.
Institutions have a variety of strategies for managing this challenge. Some limit the amount of data an individual or computer may move across the network at any given time. Others may block or filter the movement across the network of particular kinds of files. Find out which strategies and policies the campus uses.
