Special GuestsDavid H. Walker David Walker is the director of advanced technology at the University of California Office of the President. He is currently involved with strategic planning for various areas of information technology management, including federated identity management, research cyberinfrastructure, and system-wide IT architecture. In previous positions, he has been the director of technologies for the California Digital Library and the director of telecommunications at UC San Diego. Walker also managed the creation of UC Irvine's campus network and web services. Karl Heins Karl Heins is the director of information technology audit services at the University of California Office of the President. He has over 25 years of business and systems experience. As a manager for Deloitte & Touche, he advised and audited many banking, manufacturing, public utility, and nonprofit clients. He reestablished the Stanford University Internal Audit Department's IT audit function helped develop a new audit function at UCSF Stanford Health Care. Joining Stanford University’s IT department as a special projects manager, he led the Y2K readiness project and the implementation of Stanford’s first Oracle application. Heins has taught accounting, finance, and computer science at the University of South Carolina, Midlands Technical College, Chapman University, and California State University, Stanislaus. He graduated with a master’s of accountancy from University of South Carolina. Heins is a certified public accountant, a certified management accountant, and a certified information specialist. SummaryYour host, Steve Worona, will be joined by David Walker and Karl Heins, and the topic will be "The Challenges of Creating an Identity Management Infrastructure for the University of California." Using the University employee self-service application as an example, we will discuss the organizational, political, and operational challenges that are being faced in the creation of UCTrust, the University of California's federated identity management infrastructure, including the evolving roles of application owners, identity providers, and audit.
