Special Guests
Renee Shuey is a Senior Systems Engineer and Team Leader in the Emerging Technologies Group of Penn State Information Technology Services (ITS). Renee has worked in ITS for more than 15 years. Her interest in digital identity and identity management began with involvement in the Committee for Institutional Cooperation (CIC) Research Projects Group. She assisted in the early adoption of the Internet2 Shibboleth middleware software at Penn State. Shuey currently serves as a co-chair of the InCommon Technical Advisory Committee and is a member of the Net@EDU Identity Management Steering Committee and working group.
During Joel Weidner's 25 years at Penn State, he has managed the acquisition, implementation, and support of many automated systems including food production and inventory control; event ticketing; payroll; residence hall security; dining plan card access; and card-based vending, laundry, and copier programs. Currently, Weidner is responsible for information technology and card systems for Housing and Food Services, the Bryce Jordan Center, the Penn State id+ program, Document Services, Transportation Services, Procurement and Materials Management, and the University Airport. During his tenure at Penn State, he has coordinated two university-wide re-carding efforts, most recently overseeing the ID card component of the university-wide SSN conversion and re-card project in 2004. In addition to the on-campus dining meal plan, the Penn State id+ program manages a flexible spending account, LionCash+, with projected sales of $17 million for the current fiscal year. Weidner graduated from Penn State with a bachelors of science degree in Hospitality Management in 1982. SummaryYour host, Steve Worona, will be joined by P. Renee Shuey and Joel L. Weidner, and the topic will be "Penn State's Identity and Access Management Initiative" With demands for identity and access management (IAM) paralleling the explosive growth in online interactions, it is imperative that existing business systems, infrastructure, planning, and technologies evolve to keep pace with the access needs of the future. Recognizing the importance of developing a comprehensive, forward-looking strategy to deal with this issue, the IAM initiative was formed by Kevin Morooney, vice provost for information technology, in April 2007. The group comprises 27 individuals who span many administrative areas at the university. The group is co-chaired by Renee Shuey, Information Technology Services (ITS) and Joel Weidner, Auxiliary and Business Services. The group's primary charge was to create an IAM road map (or strategy) for Penn State. A secondary goal was to establish a community of people and organizations from across the university who understand each other's pressures, needs, and desires for developing an IAM infrastructure that will support and enhance academic, research, business, and collaborative processes.
