Special Guests
Klara Jelinkova is the director of computing systems at Duke University. Her responsibilities include identity management technologies, collaborative services (including e-mail, calendaring, and instant messaging), research support and server infrastructures, and storage and backup services. Prior to coming to Duke, Jelinkova spent 10 years at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Her last position at UW was assistant director of systems engineering and senior strategist for research computing. At UW, she directed the implementation of enterprise-wide infrastructure services such as centralized storage and virtualized server environments and led several process improvement efforts based on the ITIL model. Jelinkova also helped to frame research computing strategy for the UW central IT organization. She is a member of the steering committee of the EDUCAUSE Campus CyberInfrastructure working group.
Lynne O’Brien is director of instructional technology at Duke University. She led the creation of Duke’s new Center for Instructional Technology, which provides university-wide leadership and support for using technology in teaching. O’Brien came to Duke from Brown University, where she was a faculty member and manager of instructional computing services. She has organized conferences on academic computing, has taught courses in educational software design, has planned technology-enhanced classrooms, and has served on accreditation teams for the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. At Duke, she is especially interested in promoting collaboration and information sharing across schools and in helping faculty use technology to support innovative and effective teaching strategies. O’Brien holds a PhD in education from the University of Delaware. SummaryYour host, Steve Worona, will be joined by Klara Jelinkova and Lynne O’Brien, and the topic will be "The Evolving Definition of 'Student': Identity Management at Duke University." The meaning of "student" is evolving at Duke University in response to many institutional and faculty outreach efforts. This trend is mirrored at many of Duke’s peer institutions. We see the concept of "learners" expanding beyond traditionally enrolled college students to include community participants, youth enrolled in talent programs, and continuing education students. At the same time, the realm of academic services faculty use for teaching has grown beyond traditional institutionally provided services such as Blackboard to encompass Flickr, blogs, Twitter, and any new technology available to faculty for free. How can we address the expansion in student population and in resources? How do you extend your institution’s computing resources to people outside your campus? How do you extend your local service concepts and policies to the end-user commodity-driven applications that are within any faculty’s reach? Lynne O'Brien and Klara Jelinkova will discuss the issues, concepts, and solutions surrounding identity management proposed and implemented at Duke University. Related EDUCAUSE Resources
