Working Groups and Collaborations

Working Groups

Purpose

The working groups of Net@EDU offer members the opportunity to collaborate, pooling their resources, time, and energy to develop winning strategies for networking in higher education. While the different working groups' goals may differ, the groups share the common characteristic of providing a forum for thought leadership on networking issues of pressing interest.

Formation

Members can create new working groups as issues and projects arise. To form a new working group, interested parties should form a core group to serve as a steering committee and write a proposed charter which should then be submitted to the Net@EDU Advisory Committee for review. The steering committee for each working group consists of a chair, a co-chair, and at least three other individuals, all of whom represent Net@EDU member institutions.

Each year, prior to the mid-year advisory committee meeting, each working group submits a brief written report to the Net@EDU Advisory Committee, identifying the members of its steering committee and including a summary of the year's activities and a recommendation for the continuance or dissolution of the group. Based on these reports, and with thoughtful consideration of input from working group members and staff liaisons, the advisory committee determines the status of each working group. In general, a working group is continued year by year unless the issue it is addressing is "solved" or interest in the group's activities among the Net@EDU membership is too low to sustain its ongoing existence.

Structure

Working group membership is open to any Net@EDU member, as well as to guests invited by the group. Membership policies and procedures are determined by each group.

Each working group is assigned a staff liaison. The role of this liaison is to link the working group to the full range of EDUCAUSE resources, including meeting planning and Web resources, and to incorporate group concerns into the EDUCAUSE policy program.

Communication of a working group's activities to the Net@EDU membership and any outside interested party is determined by that group's steering committee. Each working group is provided a Web page on the Net@EDU Web site for a central resource repository and may create announcement and discussion listservs. Working groups are also encouraged to submit proposals to larger forums, such as the EDUCAUSE Annual Meeting, to disseminate results of projects and discoveries learned.

Working groups may also schedule additional meetings throughout the year, but they are encouraged to schedule them in conjunction with other meetings or to arrange for hosting by a member institution. Members normally pay their own travel and lodging expenses unless special funding has been organized for the purpose.

Listservs

Most working groups conduct discussions throughout the year via electronic discussion lists. **Please note that discussion lists are for Net@EDU members only** To subscribe or unsubscribe, send e-mail to listserv@listserv.educause.edu containing the one-line message SUBSCRIBE <listname> <your name>.
