Open blogs and cloud platforms such as Facebook have great educational potential. This session will present how Penn State University's reengineering of its Biology 12 introductory biology lab course and Bot 2.0, an NSF-funded research project at UNC Chapel Hill to retain student interest in the biological and botanical sciences, used these web-based platforms and applications to create, manage, and deliver engaging content and increase student recruitment and diversity in biology.

Playlists for content is a great way of looking at it. #E10_SESS124 #educause10

using metadata? started with IEEE, developed own set, limited at the moment #edutrip10 #E10_SESS124 #hanicto #yam

using CC-license for the content that is put in the playlist; in repository; accesible for guest #edutrip10 #E10_SESS124 #hanicto #yam

what is a playlist? it's all about bridging (write transition texts) between text and media available #edutrip10 #E10_SESS124 #hanicto #yam

the stuff is already out there, let's use it! #edutrip10 #E10_SESS124 #hanicto #yam

developing playlists is more sustainable than the process of developing fully open textbooks (fusion!) #edutrip10 #E10_SESS124 #hanicto #yam

fundamentals of technique is familiar; accustomed to assembling; need support #edutrip10 #E10_SESS124 #hanicto #yam

start looking for faculty already working with content (pdf); tracking people willing to participate #edutrip10 #E10_SESS124 #hanicto #yam

handed small grants to first participants; now starting with playlists #edutrip10 #E10_SESS124 #hanicto #yam

is the textbook forever? in current form no; expensive (lot's of paper); 73% of overall cost course #edutrip10 #E10_SESS124 #yam #hanicto

fact: textbook gives structure and content; goals: develop playlists of academic content to supplement or replace #edutrip10 #E10_SESS124

also goal to prepare some potential models of content delivery to be prepared for post-textbook era #edutrip10 #E10_SESS124 #hanicto #yam

same for movie-rentals; easier delivery; cannot duplicate these businessmodels, but can learn from it #edutrip10 #E10_SESS124 #hanicto #yam

good stuff happening at penn state with open courseware. good session. #E10_SESS124

how about the scaling part: not about design, but about resources (support instructional design) #edutrip10 #E10_SESS124 #yam #hanicto

flickr is robust getting data out of it #edutrip10 #E10_SESS124 #yam #hanicto

how did you arrange this with the IT-department? they ruled the central CMS out; CMS cannot keep up #edutrip10 #E10_SESS124 #yam #hanicto

used CMS for passthrough, handing in of assignments; #edutrip10 #E10_SESS124 #yam #hanicto

challenge to integrate fieldtrips online: using facebook and flickr; longitudinal engagement using FB #edutrip10 #E10_SESS124 #yam #hanicto

you can easily stay in touch with students using facebook #edutrip10 #E10_SESS124 #yam #hanicto

pro: fast and free; cons: limited customization, lock-in 'vendor', online services = vendor risk #edutrip10 #E10_SESS124 #yam #hanicto

it looks like a free lunch, but not Necessarily; look at it case-by-case #edutrip10 #E10_SESS124 #yam #hanicto

group research project: use google docs (create content online) and voicethread (deliver presentation) #edutrip10 #E10_SESS124 #yam #hanicto

reaction students: they like to use google docs and voicethread (easy to use) #edutrip10 #E10_SESS124 #yam #hanicto

impacts changes: other course design (more open courseware, expanding blogs, growing use google apps) #edutrip10 #E10_SESS124 #yam #hanicto

A Bio class at PSU used VoiceThread, YouTube, blogs, Kaitura, and Google App's to make course more interactive & innovative. #E10_SESS124

Impact google docs: immediate adoption + satisfaction from students, they develop own workflow in doc #edutrip10 #E10_SESS124 #yam #hanicto

In a Forensic Sci class; used Google docs in teams to work on a paper for 10 weeks, can meet virtually in the doc to work tgther.#E10_SESS124

google docs: unbelievable efficiency (use it for all, docs, scripts, storyboards, communication) #edutrip10 #E10_SESS124 #yam #hanicto
