Most large research universities expend a great deal of effort and significant financial resources providing some form of lecture capture, yet the parameters of student usage are only vaguely explored. In this session, UCLA's Office of Instructional Development will provide longitudinal analysis of more than five years' data on webcasting and student study behaviors.

RT @vanPopta: lecture capture technology is disrupting possitively what is going on in the classroom #edutrip10 #E10_SESS038

response by @jeroenalessi van avans RT @vanPopta: no change in way we do lectures, will be no effect on grades #edutrip10 #E10_SESS038

using weblectures makes changes in education possible, more time for interaction etc. #E10_SESS038 #edutrip10

can you replace class by weblectures? (as there is no harm); question: what is it we do? can we be more interactive #edutrip10 #E10_SESS038

link to weblectures UCLA #edutrip10 #E10_SESS038

if we don't change the way we do lectures, there will be no effect on the grades (response from 1 of the attendees) #edutrip10 #E10_SESS038

when do they look: they look at weblectures all the time (24 hours a day) #edutrip10 #E10_SESS038, more selective in beginning evening

during the days of the week: used to be up on sunday and down on friday; now all week long; mostly within 48 hours #edutrip10 #E10_SESS038

is it true that webcasts help in learning? did experiment in introd. psychology; attendance decreased by 15% with WL #edutrip10 #E10_SESS038

student had slightly better results in the webcastgroup #edutrip10 #E10_SESS038

we can say that webcasts didn't do any harm #edutrip10 #E10_SESS038

2/2 questions, easier to deal with student abscence (did you say anything important in the 1st 2 weeks) #edutrip10 #E10_SESS038

did WL affect how often to class? response 65,5% did not affect my attendance #edutrip10 #E10_SESS038

90% of the students found weblectures as helpful for learning (define learning : will I do better on the test) #edutrip10 #E10_SESS038

change in study habits? 49,5% no change, 27% spent more time on learning material #edutrip10 #E10_SESS038

attending session UCLA on effects of streamed lectures on student behavior #edutrip10 #E10_SESS038

lecture capture technology is disrupting possitively what is going on in the classroom #edutrip10 #E10_SESS038

short answer : the behaviour has changed through weblectures but not so much as you might think #edutrip10 #E10_SESS038

why WL? because we can (novelty); fulfills expectations students; assume that students can learn more or more easily #edutrip10 #E10_SESS038

additional arguments: expand classroom capac.; modification pre-captured lectures in new forms of learning materials #edutrip10 #E10_SESS038

evidence of learning gains? no, few, limited data; massive on student satisfaction #edutrip10 #E10_SESS038

initially faculty concerns on weblectures; loss of control; true that students come less to class (explain later) #edutrip10 #E10_SESS038

@vanPopta limited data? why? #edutrip10 #E10_SESS038

> 46,000 enrollments for webcasts in UCLA #edutrip10 #E10_SESS038

warning for expanding after pilots weblectures; make clear in advance U cannot garantuee that every lecture is capt #edutrip10 #E10_SESS038

webcast format: live camera and integrated materials, high quality video, quick posting materials, indexed archive materials #E10_SESS038

keep webcasts online for at least a quarter of a year; no reason to make this time shorter #edutrip10 #E10_SESS038

@vanPopta do they also add metadata to the WL's (like fora or visual cues)? #edutrip10 #E10_SESS038

faculty had problems to let students that are not enrolled use the webcasts #edutrip10 #E10_SESS038

faculty arguments in favor of WL: better prepared, more continuity from one lecture to another, better and more specific 1/2 #E10_SESS038
