The laws and regulations that govern college technology use are complex and ever-changing. This presentation will explain, in language that is accessible to nonlawyers, some of the salient legal and policy issues affecting higher education technology professionals and, through discussion of emerging laws, regulations, and policies, provide technology professionals with the tools necessary to formulate and update campus policies. This session will discuss cloud computing using the example of e-mail outsourcing contracts. We will update attendees on the current state of federal law and regulation governing peer-to-peer file sharing and other digital copyright issues. Additionally, we will discuss digital defamation issues arising from Internet bulletin boards and the current status of in loco parentis, the latest regulations and case law governing e-discovery and records management, questions on social media policies, and recent export controls issues that affect college campuses. The presentation will include case studies and attendee discussions.
