Active learning spaces support teaching and learning in a technology-rich, collaborative environment designed to engage students in their own learning. McGill University has developed principles for designing teaching and learning spaces that are based on the benchmarks of good educational practice identified in the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) and has used these principles to guide, design, support, and document the impact of different active learning spaces. In this highly interactive session, participants will explore many areas of design including architecture, IT-AV technologies, and furniture room layout as well as their impact on learning. They will use a framework to develop a support plan for these spaces, including proactive and reactive strategies to support instructors and students. Lastly, participants will develop a utilization-focused evaluation plan to determine the impact these spaces have on the teaching and learning experience at their own institutions.
