Harvard and MIT joined forces to launch edX, an open online platform aimed at improving teaching through research and expanding access to quality education around the world. After decades of mixed results in online learning across higher education, edX represents an extraordinary partnership that will bring some of the best professors in the world to students around the globe. We will discuss the historic context that set the stage for this effort and the ways this model will shape online learning in the years ahead.

A review of the rationale for edX and data on its uptake. A hit that there have been 'proctored' examinations and the intention to build financially self-sustaining model. It was interesting to contrast this presentation with the MOOC (Coursera) presentation later in the day. It provided more analytics and examples of how efficiencies could be made in assessment with immediate feedback too. The graph indicating an amazing uptake from every 'corner' of the world confirmed they are tapping a 'need' both presentations noted that considering just the number that finished the course (as against the enrolment) under conventional delivery it would have taken 15-50 to match this success.
