Ajax?

Created by Lorie Mitchell (New Mexico State University at Carlsbad) on October 25, 2005
I always thought that Ajax was a cleaning solution. Well, apparently not in the online world! Ajax is a wonderful technology that uses several different programming technologies including PHP, Java, etc, to create online applications that don't require the user to sit and wait for updates. Have you used Google Maps? GM uses Ajax technology. I had to go to wikipedia to look up what Ajax is and it gives an indepth description of the technology behind it, and also lists applications online that use it. Why am I bringing this up? For our students, of course! Instead of our students having to buy expensive software, they can now use web-based software to write their papers and do all the little things they need to do. There is even office-like software out there for them! Here is the list of software from Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_websites_using_Ajax#Office I'll be "playing" with some of this software and will post my findings later. If you have used it, feel free to respond to this blog entry and give us your opinion! I'd love to hear from you.

Educause 2005

Well, Educause 2005 was the trip from you-know-where, but at the same time I learned a lot of new terms, including tikiwiki! What an interesting word. The first time I heard an educational technologist at our Insttech meeting say it, I had her repeat it. here I am thinking that I stay on top of this stuff, yet here was a word that was totally foreign to me. I immediately jumped onto the Tiki Wiki site and began perusing the documentation as I listened to Amy tell us how she uses it on her campus. Inspired, I came back to my campus today determined to download it and install it on my own domain since our campus server doesn't have PHP or MySQL. There are times I'm quite grateful to have been a web developer in my past! So I'm currently uploading it, setting directory permissions, and all that fun stuff. I've been contemplating the best ways to encourage my faculty to use it, and I'm still a bit at a loss about all that. Hopefully after I play with it some, I will get a better idea of how to use it.

I am also downloading Macromedia Suite 8 right now to install the trial version on my Mac laptop. I was so impressed with the new Suite that I'm excited to be using it. The demonstration was impressive, and I just might get over my Flash Phobia and start using Flash. We'll see if it's THAT good!
