Working within a distributed international project

Created by John C. Hart (See notes) (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) on January 5, 2009

I just started working within a remote dba services  project. This is caused by general strategy of our faculty to outsource all IT operations to offshore companies. This allows us to save money for the major faculty activities. This is very interesting to work with people 10 000 miles away and have very good cooperation. Because of ITIL practices uses it does not matter were the Service desk is situated and we covered whole 24 hours with support because of time zone differrence. I hope that our faculty will eventually outsource at least half of overall IT operations. Will write up here in comments about successes and fails in this start-up project.

Problems with education in Eastern Europe

Created by John C. Hart (See notes) (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) on July 30, 2008

As a remote consultant for database administration services outsourcing company I just have made my second kiev trip and now I want to share my impressions. I decided to write a book (working title "Do they have a chance?") and here are some extracts.

The majority of issues concerning evolution of formal basic education for all in Ukraine – political context, stages of the evolution of the system of education, quantitative and qualitative indicators – were analyzed in the National Report "Education for All. 2000".

In Ukraine the period of transformation of the planned and centralized economy into a market one, denationalization of means of production is very difficult. In the sphere of education the main problems are caused by the situation that cut of the resources of the state budget and amount of GNP, shortcomings of the inherited system joined the new ones under conditions of the economic crisis.

What do we know about Ukraine?

Created by John C. Hart (See notes) (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) on June 18, 2008

I have just returned from my business trip to Remote database services company located in Kyiv. It has been my first visit to Ukraine so I was a bit afraid of visiting a wild slovanic country. So I decided to address to a Kiev trip agency. They met me in Boryspil airport and conveyed me and my luggage to my appartments that they rented for me in advance. I have lived for 2 months in Ukraine and I have only good impressions about this country.

Recently as many other post-soviet countries It has begun to develop. Now you feel in Kiev almost like in Europe, but services and products are considerably cheaper. People are kind and polite, though maybe only to foreigners :).

Geographically Ukraine is a state in Eastern Europe, bounded on the north by Belarus, on the north and east by the Russian Federation, on the west by Poland, Slovakia, on the southwest by Hungary, Rumania, and Moldova, and on the south by the Black Sea and the Azov Sea.
