VIRGINIA BEACH and AUSTRALIA: Scholar 360 - the next generation of Learning Management

Created by Allan Carrington (The University of Adelaide) on November 11, 2005

The podcast attached to this blog was also recorded with SKYPE and Wire Tap Pro on Friday Nov 11, and I am talking again to Glen Moriarty from Regent University in Virginina Beach VA USA. Glen founded 5 loaves.net a social network for Christians and is pioneering a new concept in Learning Management based on a Social Networking model, called Scholar 360.

This exciting new concept in learning management systems is in stage one development now and will "go public" in the middle of December 2005 The website will have demonstration capability and visitors can try out the system. There is a look and feel concept image at http://www.5loaves.net/scholar360/ Glen will announce the release of the website here and redirect visitors to the correct site once the LMS is operational in December. Please bookmark the site and visit again during December.

I asked Glen how did he get the idea for a different type of Learning Management System and it seems it started in an important social network - the local coffee shop .

Some Highlights from the Scholar 360 Podcast:

  • What was the need: Glen shared his frustration that in a traditional LMS like Blackboard, the material was isolated behind course walls, there was no social networking like a blog, he couldn't get to know his students in virtual space, no discovery learning and he felt restricted in having the students interact with the material and apply it to their lives.
  • We discussed if others were doing this social networking component built into a LMS. Glen doesnt know any and if someone does please contact him.
  • I asked the question "Will this really work?" and Glen more than answered it.
  • If it does it could revolutionize online learning.
  • We discuss a pilot course actually running now as a study.
  • There are plans to publish the research.
  • We walked through the learning process using Scholar 360
  • Glen answers the question "Is it just a traditional LMS with a Social Networking "plugin" like the approach Blackboard would use?"
  • We discuss the software's main components e.g. synchronous and asynchronous capability, CMS, audio etc.
  • Glen shares the steps and the timeline of Scholar 360 release.

Please contact us if you would like to discuss Scholar 360 a social networking LMS or have any comments about the podcast.

Allan
