Joining the Debate: NAF and Google Compiling Feedback on National Broadband Plan Until July 30Created by Anna Gould (EDUCAUSE) on July 20, 2009
The Washington, DC-based think tank, the New America Foundation, and Google are partnering in a mission to collect public feedback for the National Broadband Plan. The economic stimulus package, which Congress passed earlier this year, mandated that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) create such a plan. Since receiving that monumental task, the commission has sought feedback from a variety of stakeholders, including those in industry, federal, state and local government, and individual consumers. Seeking to provide a forum for public comments, NAF and Google announced late last week the creation of a “Google Moderator page." The page will be used to collect feedback, and allow for voting on already submitted comments. So far, people have submitted 478 opinions. After collecting the comments for two weeks, the organizations plan to identify the most popular and innovative ideas and submit them to the official record at the FCC. They are expecting to receive comments regarding: most efficient ways to ensure broadband for all Americans; best ways to maximize on affordability, as well as accessibility for infrastructure and services; methods for evaluating the program’s effectiveness; and ways in which broadband may advance society (i.e. health care delivery, energy policy, worker training, job creation, etc…). If you wish to share your own thoughts on this subject, join the debate here.
