NTIA Announces First State Broadband Mapping GrantsCreated by Anna Gould (EDUCAUSE) on October 7, 2009
After receiving applications from all 50 states, five territories, and the District of Columbia, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) announced that it has awarded the first round of grants for broadband mapping. The grants are part of the NTIA's State Broadband Data and Development Grant Program, which aims to increase broadband accessibility "through better data collection and broadband planning." The first four grant recipients include: the California Public Utilities Commission, the Indiana Office of Technology, the Rural Economic Development Center (e-NC Authority), and the Vermont Center for Geographic Information. Funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the NTIA's matching grant program is designed to provide funding for "gathering and verifying state-specific data on the availability, speed, location, and technology type of broadband services." The data collected will help inform those charged with developing a national broadband plan. The NTIA says the initial four award recipients submitted strong applications, which included using multiple ways of collecting and verifying data and placing an emphasis on collaboration among state agencies and partners. The NTIA is expected to announce further grant awards on a rolling basis this fall.
