Podcast: Protecting Privacy in a Sea of Data - Joanne McNabb, Chief of the Office of Privacy Protection for the State of CaliforniaCreated by Gerry Bayne (EDUCAUSE) on May 11, 2009
This fifty minute podcast features a keynote address from the 2009 EDUCAUSE & Internet2 Security Professionals Conference. The speech, "Protecting Privacy in a Sea of Data," is by Joanne McNabb, Chief of the Office of Privacy Protection for the State of California. The volume of digital data is growing at a rate that is nearly unimaginable. In 2007, the digital universe was estimated to be 161 exabytes of information collected and stored, with a further tenfold increase projected for 2011. It's no wonder that information security and privacy professionals in all organizations often feel like they're drowning in a sea of data! At the same time, the tide of public concern about privacy and identity theft is rising. This session discusses aspects of the current information management challenge and will suggest some strategies for keeping our heads above water.
