I'll be pitching this to my bosses tonight so I can begin work on it, perhaps in early 2009 or 2010 at the latest. I'm hoping to at least build an internal proof of concept in January or November, and I will anxiously await what white papers, graphs/charts, and other resources you can offer to make the case for VCL.

The VCL "Library" of white papers, presentations, and relevant material will be kept in The Info Corner - in the lower right corner of the home page http://vcl.ncsu.edu/  We'll use this Educause/Connect blog primarily for discussion.

I started working on a installation for a demo and had a couple of comments and question.

The http link on ibiblio for the virtual machine (vm) download is not functional.

The "use vcl" command in the vcl-general.sql file is not needed and it will error out when running the statement.

After settting everything up and going to the website, I get redirected from http://--- to https://--- and get the following error. Error connecting to localhost. Any ideas?? I am thinking it might have to do with the value for $mcryptkey. What should this be? And what should the $mcryptiv be?

Hi Henry,

I'm now purchasing IBM BladeCenter for our minimun VCL start. During the process, I think that I have a lot of questions, problems and solutions that VCL newbie would face so that I would like to share them with VCL community as much as possible.

Do you have any good tools like Wiki or mailing-list to do so?

Best regards,

Shoji Kajita, Nagoya University

With virtual computing labs, what makes this software great is that anyone can access varies types of software such as Adobe Creative Suite, AutoCAD, or Mathematica from their home, or their dorm room. This idea makes it unnecessary to come to campus during lab hours to use these applications and locate info.  All you need is a web browser, as the computationally intensive tasks are performed on a vast array of servers. Therefore, users will be able to use their older computers, while still running the latest software versions.  The best part is that virtual labs never close, so students can look up searches that accommodate their time schedule.
