Managing Collaborations and Creating Solutions: IT, Librarians, and Student Judicial Affairs Jointly Addressing Academic Integrity IssuesCreated by Lida Larsen (EDUCAUSE) on April 17, 2009
Managing Collaborations and Creating Solutions: IT, Librarians, and Student Judicial Affairs Jointly Addressing Academic Integrity Issues Abstract - The USC Libraries spearheaded a campus wide Academic Integrity initiative aimed at reducing the number of academic integrity cases referred to Student Judicial Affairs by educating students to comply with academic integrity standards as part of the library's information literacy program. This presentation will describe the creation of a joint academic integrity-information literacy multimedia tutorial and present data about its effectiveness in combating the problem of plagiarism. An IT librarian (and former documentary filmmaker) will present an innovative solution for embedding high-quality/resolution video into the Adobe Breeze product for a richer multimedia tutorial. Presenters - Sonia Chaidez, Irvine Fellow in Media and Learning, Whittier College Avril Cunningham, Faculty Librarian, University of Southern California NOTES Academic Integrity questionnaire created for the project - key learning –it’s important to Beta test the questions Effect on plagiarism cases – 166 cases annually before the program, 111 in the first year of the program They are revising for summer 2009 with Web 2.0 The resources are already on the instruction pages & writing program. Student Judicial Affairs added it as past of education program for plagiarizers and it has been added to orientations. It will also be included as refresher in Gen Ed classes. Cultural views of Academic Integrity was discussed during the session as well. They played a segment of the lesson on plagiarism / audio plus presentation slides and discussed streaming video files via Adobe Connect software. The Virtual Library Tour included an embedded video box. A handout of instructions to stream the content was provided for attendees. Discussion of default set for “preloading” has been problematic. Students are used to waiting a second, not longer, for videos (ie, YouTube) Facilitation on content was 100% collaborative – all had good buy-in and were engaged enough that the key players brought in others from his/her unit. They had a 8-12 week timeline to implement the program. Group Brainstorm:
