Tag Cloud of University Home PagesCreated by Matt Pasiewicz (EDUCAUSE) on September 14, 2008
Building on my work here, I was wondering what it might look like to create a tag cloud from the text of university home pages. Nothing especially interesting to report from it ... just the usual suspects. Nonetheless, I thought I'd go ahead and share it. 'Guess it might be interesting to compare to a future snapshot. Great work, Matt. I've recently been looking at similar visualisation tools - will hopefully get around to posting on this topic soon.
We are seeing more use of tag cloud. I would like to see people writing up a rigorous framework to use Word Cloud or Tag Cloud as a qualitative research tool. If you know of any research done, do post here to inform us.
I have embedded Word Cloud feature into a system that takes Short Messaging Service (SMS) feedback from audience (students) through their mobile phones during lectures or seminars and have the word cloud generated instantaneously from the online system. It is known as SMS Response System (www.smsrs.org ). It gives the user the chance to provide a quick snapshot of the text content (e.g. feedback from audience about the lecture), or textual responses from audience for a particular topic. This will allow for discussion based on the word cloud without having to spend too much time to read each individual responses (to be done after the lecture at leisure time for more indepth and comprehensive understanding), and provide a scope for discussion with the audience.
The system is at http://www.mxs-systems.com but it require an account to use the system. At present, the system is under research by the Centre for Applied Research, SIM University, Singapore.
