pdierschke's blogWho is missing out?Created by Patrick Dierschke (Angelo State University) on July 9, 2006
We went sight-seeing today, driving to Penn's Cave, a riverboat cavern tour. As we were making our way to the park, we passed an Amish carriage, filled with a family of little children. As we continued along, I thought about all that they may be missing with the technology tools that we take for granted, and the new ones that our student expectations continue to mandate. But, then again, are we missing out by losing touch with our immediate community, and the joy of non-combustible travel? Being from a rural area, I appreciate the natural way of life, but embrace the potential of technology, creating a global community in which all may participate. My hope this week is to understand more about this balance, and learn strategies to maintain it. Ed Tech BlogCreated by Patrick Dierschke (Angelo State University) on July 6, 2006
One of my favorite blogs is Wes Fryer's "Moving at the Speed of Creativity" , found at speedofcreativity.org Wes has been involved in all aspects of technology, moving from the K-12 environment to higher education, and now the Director of Education Advocacy for the state of Oklahoma. He has great insight in how technology, especially disruptive technology, is impacting the educational arena. Give it a try!
Going to PennsylvaniaCreated by Patrick Dierschke (Angelo State University) on July 6, 2006
I will be leaving for the EDUCAUSE Learning Technology Leadership (LTL)Institute on Saturday. I am excited to be able to spend a week with instructional technology people, and hope to absorb as much information as I can. My institution, Angelo State University, is moving toward developing an instructional technology department to support faculty. Presently, we support faculty through multimedia development and training, but have not focused on the pedagogical side of the equation. My questions to be posed this next week: 1) If you were given the task of creating an instructional technology department, what would your first steps be? 2) What are your three top priorities in your department? 3) What are the main obstacles to a successful department? I sent this out to the registered LTL particiapants, and received several responses:
