Educational Gaming ...

Created by David Penrose (San Juan College) on June 14, 2005

The conversations around the water cooler increasingly include a discussion of academic gaming. It would seem that simulated words, with their complexities and intricacies, would be time consuming to create. Is there any software that provides for the most rapid development? How are these games distributed? Is there a site for educational simulations? Where are all of the IGD (instructional game designers)?

I hope to see more posts asking the same questions. We at Sun have been developing an open framework for the development of simulations that could be used in the pure gaming sense as well as for educational purposes.
My example is always the SIMS where a virtual chemistry lab can be blown up time and again by a group of students exploring the periodic table.
We have been involved in discussions with the game publishers with some success to develop this further but their current market is extremely aggressive leaving them little opportunity to step back.
More posts like these will help get their attention.

my colleagues at ITU.dk are doing some interesting things in developing an open source system for mmorpg/simulations. as for the environments, there are many. you would be well served to ask the folks that actually study these topics like http://www.digra.org . as for frameworks, many people use commercial systems with the permission of the publisher, and some are developing new systems, it depends on the needs.
