PREMIS Metadata Tutorial: An Overview of the Data Dictionary for Preservation Metadata with Implementation Case Studies

The UC San Diego Libraries, the California Digital Library, the San Diego Supercomputer Center, and the PREMIS Editorial Committee are sponsoring a tutorial on the PREMIS Data Dictionary Feb. 11, 2008 at the UC San Diego Geisel Library on the UCSD campus in La Jolla, CA.

The PREMIS (Preservation Metadata Implementation Strategies) Working Group was formed in June 2003 as an international group whose goal was to define a standard set of implementable, core preservation metadata, with guidelines and recommendations for management and use. The PREMIS Working Group released its Data Dictionary for Preservation Metadata in May 2005.  This developed into the first data dictionary for implementing preservation metadata and is now known as PREMIS.

The PREMIS data dictionary is the foundation by which Metadata can be generated to play a vital role in enabling the effective management, discovery, and re-usability of digital information. Preservation metadata provides provenance information, documents preservation activity, identifies technical features, and aids in verifying the authenticity of digital objects. PREMIS is a core set of metadata elements recommended for use in all preservation repositories regardless of the type of materials archived and the preservation strategies employed.

Agenda

This one day tutorial provides an introduction to PREMIS and its data model, a walk-through of the Data Dictionary, examples of PREMIS metadata in real situations, and implementation considerations, particularly using PREMIS with XML/METS. It includes an implementers' panel and will also provide an opportunity for participants to share their own implementation issues and experiences. 

The workshop will be taught by Rebecca Guenther.  Rebecca  Guenther is Senior Networking and Standards Specialist in the Network Development and MARC Standards Office of the Library of Congress. She has worked at LC since 1980 in various positions and in her current position since 1989.  Her current responsibilities include work on national and international information standards, primarily in the area of metadata.  She is chair of the PREMIS Editorial Committee and was co-chair of the OCLC/RLG PREMIS Working Group which developed the PREMIS Data Dictionary.

This tutorial will benefit individuals and institutions interested in implementing PREMIS metadata for the long-term management and preservation of their digital information. Some basic knowledge of XML is presumed. This symposium will be of interest to librarians and archivists working with digital libraries or with other digital preservation initiatives.

1. A better understanding of the infrastructure for reliable, sustainable digital preservation programs

2. A comprehensive view of information needed to support digital preservation

3. A beginning knowledge of the common data model for organizing and thinking about preservation metadata

4. Illustrative guidance for local implementations of PREMIS for preservation repositories

5. An understanding of the standard for exchanging information packages between repositories (to include metadata to support the preservation process)

6. An appreciation for how PREMIS might be used:  as a basis for  metadata definition in developing systems, as a checklist of metadata  needs for existing repositories, or as a standard for exchange between  partners.

Applied Case Studies

This tutorial will include a PREMIS implementers’ discussion panel that will provide applied perspectives on work being done at the Stanford University Libraries, the UC San Diego Libraries, and the San Diego Supercomputer Center.
