6th Annual National Cyber Security Awareness Month Kicked-Off by Secretary of DHS

National Cyber Security Awareness Month was kicked-off on October 1st at an event held in Washington, D.C., attended by Secretary Napolitano from the Department of Homeland Security and other dignitaries. The event, orchestrated by the National Cyber Security Alliance, brought together partners from government, industry, and academia to declare their commitment to advancing safety and security in cyberspace.

Secretary Napolitano also used the occasion to announce that DHS has received new authority to recruit and hire 1,000 cybersecurity professionals across DHS over the next three years—established to help fulfill the Department’s broad mission to protect the nation’s cyber infrastructure, systems and networks. “Effective cybersecurity requires all partners—individuals, communities, government entities and the private sector—to work together to protect our networks and strengthen our cyber resiliency,” said Secretary Napolitano. “This new hiring authority will enable DHS to recruit the best cyber analysts, developers and engineers in the world to serve their country by leading the nation’s defenses against cyber threats.”

President Obama has issued a proclamation to mark October as National Cyber Security Awareness Month. He said, "I call upon the people of the United States to recognize the importance of cybersecurity and to observe this month with appropriate activities, events, and trainings to enhance our national security and resilience." The Senate also passed Senate Resolution 285 that "congratulates the National Cyber Security Alliance, the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center, the Department of Homeland Security, and other organizations working to improve cybersecurity in the United States on the sixth anniversary of the National Cybersecurity Month during October 2009." The Resolution was co-sponsored by Senators Jay Rockefeller (D-WV), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), Tom Carper (D-DE), Barbara Mikulski (D-MD), Joe Lieberman (I-CT), Susan Collins (R-ME), Harry Reid (D-NV), Carl Levin (D-MI), Robert Bennett (R-UT), Olympia Snowe (R-ME), Mary Landrieu (D-LA), Orrin Hatch (R-UT), George Voinovich (R-OH), Evan Bayh (D-IN), and Thad Cochran (R-MS).
