A couple of interesting Slashdot postsCreated by Sarah E. Smith (North Carolina State University) on September 22, 2005
While looking through the most recent Slashdot posts this morning, I came across an article and a query that were interesting. The first was a post and another post about an article in Wired about a new board game called c-jump. The goal of the game is to find the most efficient way to “ski” down a mountain. The catch is that the player must make decisions based on common computer programming syntax, such as “if(X==1)” you can go down a certain path. This seems like a clever and fun way to introduce students to some simple computer programming syntax. The other Slashdot post was a question from a college student about making an open source clicker. I think this is a very interesting idea. Mostly the student is asking for information about inexpensive hardware and software information to make a clicker device. While this is just in the beginning stages of development, I think this shows a great potential for open source software in education. And if anyone has any great ideas, they should respond to this post. I would like to see open source clicker technology in the next year or so.
