How Can We Make Lectures Better?

Created by Susan Lister (NewMedia Educational Services) on August 15, 2005

I'm currently working on a learning object project where we're tackling the issue of lectures in the post-secondary sector.  To learn more about our project please drop by our discussion area: http://newmediaworkshops.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=2

or the project's wiki at:

I'm sure many of you are thinking, "improve the lectures?!  Shouldn't we be getting rid of them?!".  We believe lecturing isn't going away any time soon so we're taking the "can't beat 'em then join 'em" approach.  Here is a description of our proposed our project:

Our learning object will address some of the professional development needs of instructors in post-secondary settings.  Recognizing that "lectures and delivery of content have a position of primacy in university practice" (Phillips, 2005) and that lectures continue to be  "relatively cost effective and useful in providing a knowledge base" (Bligh, 1972 in Phillips, 2005), our Inukshuk Project will focus specifically on helping instructors to present effective lectures.
