DC News: US Senate Confirms New FCC Commissioners – 5-7-12

Today, the U.S. Senate voted to confirm two new FCC Commissioners – Jessica Rosenworcel (D) and Ajit Pai (R).  Ms. Rosenworcel formerly worked for Senate Commerce Committee Chairman Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) and Mr. Pai formerly worked at the FCC, the Senate Judiciary Committee and the Justice Department.  President Obama nominated the duo in November 2011.

FCC Seeks Reform of the Way it Collects $8.5 Billion in Annual Universal Service Fund Fees

On April 27, 2012, the FCC unanimously voted to overhaul the way it collects approximately $8.5 billion a year in federal Universal Service Fund fees.  The FCC’s overarching goal for this proceeding is to ensure “delivery of voice and broadband communications to all Americans and achieving core FCC objectives of promoting broadband innovation, investment and adoption.”  In addition, the FCC seeks comment on any transition periods for reform.

In particular, the Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (FNPRM, FCC 12-46) asks the following questions:

DC News: FCC Hosts Wireless Collocation Workshop – 5-1-12

The FCC's Wireless Telecommunications Bureau, in cooperation with the National Association of Telecommunications Officers and Advisors (NATOA), will host a workshop focusing on collocations of wireless and broadband antennas on wireless and other communications towers (e.g. AM Radio towers) and structures (e.g. water towers)

The workshop will provide an overview of wireless collocations that augment mobile broadband and wireless services in cities and communities. The workshop will help inform municipal leaders, planners and interested members of the public how wireless collocations can provide benefits and economic opportunities by expanding mobile broadband, wireless data coverage, and aiding first responders.
