2010 Southwest Regional Conference Discussion Session: Taking Care of Your Career
Notes courtesy of Shirlene Pearson, Southern Methodist University
Pattie Orr, VP for IT/Dean of Libraries at Baylor University, Waco, Texas, lead the discussion about the benefits of having a good mentor and of being a mentor in the 2010 Southwest Regional Conference session titled Taking Care of Your Career.
Key Take-aways:
- While it is important for individuals to find a mentor who can help guide them, one must ultimately take management and responsibility for their own career.
- You should always assess yourself both from your own perspective and by seeking input from trusted colleagues and your mentor(s).
- Always have an updated resume and a plan so that you are a career manager and not a career drifter
- Have a good cover letter – customized for each job application.
Resource: an EDUCAUSE Mentoring Information Kit is available online at http://www.educause.edu/mentoring. It provides more details and resources for both the mentee and prospective mentor.
