Log in today and get started! Digital Storytelling WorkshopCreated by Tony Sams (University of Utah) on October 15, 2009
It has been a great semester so far. I am currently co-teaching Writing 3040 "Digital Storytelling" with Alison Regan, PhD. It has been quite the challenge to teach a new subject, although I am quite fluent with visual literacy and the technology to assemble the projects. The applied use, that is the matter. Trying to ignite that spark, to try a different approach in problem solving, working collaboratively in a visual environment, and connecting pedagogies with the process of telling stories. I am also teaching a workshop as part of a grant I wrote to bring digital storytelling into out library environment. The short workshop feel seems to fit better for me. So I thought I would share some comments on the first 2 sessions (out of 3). Day 1

Net Neutrality and Managed Services: Your Expertise is Needed!Created by Wendy Wigen (EDUCAUSE) on October 14, 2009
With the FCC poised to vote up or down on opening a rule making proceeding on net neutrality, the old battle lines are being redrawn in the press and advocates and opponents are taking their respective and predictable positions. Meanwhile, in the background, and the back rooms, calm and hopefully constructive conversations are being held. Looking backward is usually only helpful to appreciate how much we’ve learned and advanced; despite the news reports, net neutrality is not the same issue it was in 2005 or 2006.

GOP Senators Express Net Neutrality Concerns to GenachowskiCreated by Anna Gould (EDUCAUSE) on October 14, 2009
Some Senate Republicans are asking FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski to tone down his net neutrality proposal. In a letter sent yesterday, eighteen Senators wrote that the suggested regulations would be "counterproductive and risk harming the great advancements in broadband speed and deployment." FCC Commissioners are expected to vote on this issue on October 22. If the rules pass, the public would have an opportunity to provide comments on them before the rules became permanent.

You will find information for faculty, teaching academic staff, and instructors to help them get started. There is also information on our grant project, including our surveys developed and our findings (also published in the May 07 ECAR). Finally, there is information on student faqs and student support.

Where is telehealth and why is it taking so long to get here?Created by Wendy Wigen (EDUCAUSE) on October 13, 2009
The Broadband Breakfast Club sponsored an excellent dialogue this morning (October 13) on telehealth. Four doctors, one from the army, one from the veterans’ administration, one regarded as the “father of telehealth”, and one from Kaiser Permanente presented on what it is and why it is good. Since many of our member institutions have medical schools, I thought it would be a good place to learn something about broadband and its relationship to telehealth. What I learned:

How can we provide free online e-portfolios for our students?Created by Kelly Walsh (The College of Westchester) on October 12, 2009
Can Web 2.0 tools provide graduates with a way to create an online portfolio of work, at no cost, and help to position them for job search success?
I believe that all students who graduate with degrees in Digital Media or related disciplines should have an online representational electronic portfolio when they complete their studies. This type of tool, accessible to any potential employer, can play a critical role in the job search process. An online portfolio can also be a powerful resource for students in many other academic disciplines.

EDUCAUSE Releases 7 Things... Brief on VirtualizationCreated by Peggy Kurkowski (EDUCAUSE) on October 8, 2009
Virtualization is an approach by which several applications—sometimes running on different operating systems—run on the same piece of hardware, creating multiple “virtual” servers from a single machine. Software manages the different applications and systems, resulting in an experience for end users that is indistinguishable from having each application on a dedicated machine. A virtualized data center uses fewer machines, requiring less physical space and less energy for cooling. In the 7 Things You Should Know About Virtualization, learn how by avoiding hardware that runs at partial capacity, virtualization provides greater return on IT investments, and a virtualized server environment provides an IT organization with greater flexibility to deploy new applications.
