ETCOM call for proposals for mini-presentations at EDUCAUSE 2010

Created by Molly Tamarkin (Duke University) on August 31, 2010

This year the Evolving Technology Committee is adopting the theme of “You 3.0" and is exploring the relationship between evolving technologies and individual career development. For our 2010 annual presentation, we want to present five 5-minute Ignite-style presentations which describe deploying a new technology or managing technology change in the context of its impact on your career, management style, and/or professional development.

See our Google spreadsheet for more information and to sign up: https://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?formkey=dFlHNjhzemRjNGFXNlJvaWg...

Please keep in mind that our time limit is fixed and allows for just five presentations. If we have a lot of volunteers, we will select a handful which represent diverse institutions and speak to different levels of technological sophistication. Thanks!

Many great peacemakers have faced significant challenges on their mission to promote peace. These challenges have led to truly inspiring success stories, reflecting their determination and motivation towards achieving their aim.

Peace One Day aims to bring these individuals to young people’s attention, examining figures such as Mahatma Gandhi, Wangari Maathai, Rosa Parks and others, while exploring the difficulties they encountered on their journeys.

Register for our free online Resource (http://www.peaceoneday.org/en/education) and access our lesson plan & resource which looks at a selection of leaders, the characteristics they share and how anyone has the ability to make a change for the better. The DVD The Day After Peace, is an excellent accompaniment to the lesson as many of the relevant topics are part of the story; once you have registered you will have free access to the 32 minute version of this film.

Blogging in Education Today, part 3 (Student Blogging)

Created by Kelly Walsh (The College of Westchester) on August 17, 2010

Continuing our multi-part series on the use of blogs in education today, we look at various examples of Student blogging efforts.

Over the last two weeks we’ve looked at various ways in which today’s teachers are using blogs. This week we continue our review of the educational blogoshpere by looking at different ways in which students are using blogs in education-oriented applications.

There are various reasons why students blog in an educational context. Some examples include blogging as part of a classroom effort involving other students, blogging on their own simply because they enjoy it, and blogging as part of a “sharing the experience” blog on a college web site.

Created by Keith Palmer (Emporium Books) on August 17, 2010

Rapid development of neuroscience opens a wide gate for merging technology with biology. Brain-computer interface is a great example how this can be successfully achieved.

Brain-computer interface possibly has a wide range of use, from entertainment to patience care to a global communication. Here I will list several examples where humanity will benefit from BCI, or BMI (Brain-Machine Interface).

Core Data Redesign -- What Members Told Us

Created by Daniel A. Updegrove (EDUCAUSE) on August 11, 2010

A key component of the CDS Redesign project has been obtaining input from EDUCAUSE members about their use of the service, critiques and suggestions for enhancements, and, in some cases, reasons why CDS has been underutilized. As anticipated, given EDUCAUSE's large and diverse worldwide membership, feedback -- via focus groups, interviews, an online survey -- provides a broad range of perspectives. Let me summarize key themes that have emerged to guide the system redesign.

Still a useful tool – Perhaps most striking for a service that was introduced in 2002, only 2% of the 335 respondents to our survey hold the view that "CDS is a concept that has outlived its usefulness." Since this year's survey has been completed by 895 member campuses, and since over 1,500 campuses have participated since CDS was launched in 2002, we see a strong mandate to continue this annual survey and benchmarking service.
