Enterprise, Business, and Technical Architects (ITANA) Constituent Group
This EDUCAUSE constituent group serves as the outreach arm for Enterprise, Business and Technical Architects in Academia (ITANA). The discussion group is focused on developing the skills, tools and a suite of resources to assist institutions with their enterprise, business and technical architectural needs. The group also acts to help architects build their peer-group and find mentors. This group supports knowledge transfer by helping architects share their campus efforts, methodologies, models, frameworks, and success stories. It supports practice development by creating a space for enterprise, business and technical architects to grow their expertise. The group also serves as a voice for architecture across higher education. This group will meet at the EDUCAUSE Annual Conference and will use this list to discuss issues throughout the year. Visit the ITANA website for more information.

We are thinking about it, in fact I had a meeting this morning where it was discussed. We’ve done a few on-off projects in the past that provide enterprise data to services managed outside of central IT. We have a couple of applications that query data through our LDAP proxy service and one that we wrote a specific web services interface for but we want to look at the possibility of a more standard and scalable approach. Besides determining a suitable technical solution, we know we will need to work out a request and approval process that includes the data owners and some sort of application review to verify accurate use of the data and that appropriate access controls are being used in the consuming application. We also want to make sure application owners are informed about existing record policies.
We are in the early stages of thinking through...

ITANA and CIO CG Joint Screen2Screen: EA - Shining a Light on IT Spend, March 15, 2013
Join us for a joint ITANA and CIO CG ScreenScreen: Enterprise Architecture - Shining a Light on IT Spend, March 15, 2013 2:00PM to 3:00PM EST (GMT -5)
Three case studies and a panel discussion will highlight how Enterprise Architecture (EA) helps IT leadership shine a light on IT spend for their business partners on campus. At UBC, EA blueprint activities help the business side of the enterprise recognize redundancies in the IT portfolio and help them link acquisitions to campus strategy. UMUC is using Capability Mapping to plan and manage expenditures and to help business partners to invest strategically. UW-Madison has an Architecture Review Board that bring the business side into the discussion and educates them on the complexities of IT projects, IT landscape and IT strategic planning.
Join us for three case studies and a panel...

This has turned into an epic reply so I’ll provide an abstract:
<abstract>
I have done some basic mapping of our systems portfolio, there isn’t much in the way of architectural tools to support this kind of activity. There is a cross over here with ITIL based service management approaches. Much of the approaches I’ve seen take a “bottom up” approach of map the detail and then summarise into an overview, however this is resource intensive. Tools to help take a “top down” overview from 50,000 feet would be useful, a good starting point would be classifying service provision into major service areas.

I was perusing the minutes from the last ITANA conference call, and saw there was some discussion about Box.com. UM has had our Box implementation up for over a year now and, if there is interest, I would love to offer a Q&A GHangout with the two lead people on our implementation (business lead and technical lead) to discuss our approach and lessons learned.
Let me know if you, or someone at your institution would be interested in participating in such a hangout.

Hi all
I am currently documenting all existing interfaces between our systems in order to establish an interface catalog that could act as an aid in our initiative to implement a SOA/ESB.
I was wondering if anybody might have any suggestions as to a template I could use for this documentation.
Basically I'm thinking of a one-page document per interface that adequately describes the interface without going into too much low-level detail.

ITANA,
As part of our approach to enterprise desktop management, Notre Dame is investigating enterprise-level endpoint backup solutions. We are currently working with the University of Illinois to conduct initial product viability analysis. Given the positive reception to last week's Internet2 Net+ announcements, we believe this is an opportunity for the community to come together and create new service offering in this fragmented market.
Just to be perfectly clear...
(1) Notre Dame is interested in investigating an enterprise solution using products like Carbonite, Mozy or CrashPlan (not an exhaustive list).
(2) Notre Dame is interested in taking a lead in working with Internet2 and investigating this as a Net+ service offering.
We are looking for partners.

[ITANA] MuleSoft or other open source ESB and PeopleSoft?
Anyone on the list have experience using the MuleSoft ESB to integrate with PeopleSoft? Specifically for events that start in PS that we want to use a pub/sub pattern on?
Mule doesn’t have a PS application adapter (or most of the open source ESB’s that I can find), so if you’ve solved this problem, I’d be interested in hearing how you did it. We explored the Oracle SOA Suite tools but are having some sticker shock on the solution and are looking for lower cost options.

Wow! I thought Laura was a great presenter and leader. Her message and direction were very clear.
So, a couple of thoughts I would like to add:
- It helps to have a goal for the whole university to drive out costs beyond the budget constraints. Everyone is expected to pitch in. So, Laura and her team have gotten the support from top leadership of the university.
- I agree with the simple pictures. Service and funding strategy and flipping the types of IT services are areas we try to explain to our customers, but we don't have pictures to make it clear.
- The methodology for commoditizing would be interesting to explore further. How do they find all the costs when things are so decentralized? Are the schools and departments willing...

We are hoping to learn from other schools around their project onboarding and prioritization processes. I'm linking the two processes because it seems like you can't really prioritize projects without sufficient data upon which to make decisions (which

Do any of you have a documented process that works well for you that we could look at?
Thanks,

Hi All,
I would like to talk through architectures and solutions for this use case during tomorrow's call.
We have multiple Learning Management Systems (LMS) and other consumers of Course Roster information. Right now the LMSs come in and do complete course roster refreshes. That is, they grab all the course rosters data for all the courses that they host every four hours from a Web Service. They would like to move to a notification system where they would subscribe to a queue and be notified of when there are changes to rosters. If a roster they are interested in has been change, they would call the Web Service and get just that roster's data.
This seems simple but as I've thought through it, the problem becomes a bit prickly. I would love to get all your feedback and input on this issue.
Thanks,
Jim
ps. You know that any member can use the Thursday calls to vet a problem with their peers like this. Not just me. Just let me know if you want time on the agenda...
