Hi All,

This week's ITANA call will be a Screen2Screen session with Laura Patterson the CIO of University of Michigan.

Three years ago, the University of Michigan created the role of CIO and appointed Laura Patterson to the position.   The university leadership asked Laura to merge several central IT departments together and coordinate the IT environment across the entire university.  She was also asked to move Michigan IT to best-of-class and save money in the process.   Join Laura as she discusses Michigan's NextGen initiative and the importance of EA in its success.

Join us for this 2012-2013 kick-off event this Thursday at 2PM EDT.

You will join using the same conference call number and Adobe Connect URL (see below).

Have you wondered what your peers are doing with regard to SOA strategy, products, or standards? We'd like to find out. Your colleagues in the ITANA SOA Working Group ask for your participation in a short survey about the state of SOA at your institution.

We expect this short survey to take 10-15 minutes to complete. Multiple responses from the same institution are ok. Please feel free to skip any question you don't wish to answer or don't have time for.

The survey is located at the following link:

http://tinyurl.com/c8xpn23

An analysis of the survey results will be shared on the ITANA mailing list, at the ITANA Face2Face meeting at Educause 2012, and through the ITANA web site.

Thank you!

Piet

Hi all,

Have any of you implemented a Provisioning Orchestrator product?  What did you choose, and why?

Also, for you Gmail users, what did you do with your users who manage regulated data (ITAR, HIPAA)?

thanks,

We will resume regular calls in September. I will use the next two calls for ITANA Face2Face Planning sessions. Look for more news on the Face2Face 2012 soon. We will also put on hold the two Peer-Group (New to Architecture and Leading as an Architect) until September and let the end-of-Summer vacations, back to school rush et all work itself out. All- At Internet2, we are working on a long-awaited, long-needed Web redesign project. The redesign builds on information from our recently completed Market Research and Audience Segmentation study. We hope that the new Web design—the first substantive redesign in almost a decade—will better serve our current and prospective members, and better inform and engage the R&E community. We are asking users from several important audience segments to help us test our Web designs. Would you be willing to give us an hour of your time to help ensure that our new designs hit their target? There will be two rounds of testing, the first with a design prototype (August 21–31, 2012), and the second with a clickable prototype (October 9–12, 2012). If you would be willing to do this, if you would let me know ASAP I would be grateful. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. I understand that you are very busy and we would sincerely appreciate your input. Thanks- Steve...

Hi everyone,
We are hoping to learn from other schools around their project onboarding and prioritization processes. I'm linking the two processes because it seems like you can't really prioritize projects without sufficient data upon which to make decisions (which is what we're really after).
Do any of you have a documented process that works well for you that we could look at?
Thanks,

Hi All, It is with deep sadness that I pass along the news that Bob Morgan passed away yesterday. R.L. Bob was a great partner in the founding of ITANA over five years ago. I worked with him frequently during my early years in higher education. He was a constant and pleasing presence at Internet2 and Common Solution Group meetings. He had a great perspective and insight into what makes the world of IT tick. We lost a good person, a great contributor, a father and friend. He will be missed by a great many people. Hi all, We're looking at the issue of data storage in the long term, and how we can find a solution that will scale, meet our needs, and still remain affordable. The issue of backups, for example, alone have the potential to eat up our budget if we project a few years out... between the price of licenses for backup software, as well as our need for 2 backup copies of our backup server. I would love to know if any other schools have tackled this issue and have come up with any long-term solutions that scale & keep costs manageable (while still meeting data & records retention needs). Another concern is that if (when) we do have a catastrophic failure - because of the sheer volume of data - it would probably take a full month to restore everything from backup... and there isn't likely to be a good way to prioritize data to restore it in a way that restores critical functions first (and while metadata is theoretically a great thing, practically no one will take the time to...

CWRU is considering a SOA strategy workshop from one vendor. The workshop would cover SOA in general and at CWRU.  Also it would help lay out a road map to help  with  future planning and strategy. So we are asking if any of your organization did go through a similar exercise and if you have a recommended vendor, or a training partner that you can suggest.

Thank you in advance for your help on this,
