IT Accessibility Constituent Group
Programs, services, and resources at universities and colleges continue to expand exponentially, and delivery methods have become increasingly technology-centric. Unless these technologies are designed and deployed to support the access needs of all users, including those with disabilities, universities and colleges risk excluding qualified students, faculty, staff, and other stakeholders.
The IT Accessibility Constituent Group will help the EDUCAUSE community to assess the scope of issues of IT accessibility, identify resources and initiatives, develop best practices on policy and assistive program and service development, and in general focus on how to approach campus-wide universal access to information available via technology by engaging in dialogue across boundaries within and beyond the campus environment. This group meets at the EDUCAUSE annual conference and uses the electronic discussion list to discuss issues throughout the year.

Hi all,
Sorry for the delay in getting these out. At the last meeting we
mostly talked about finding out more information accessibility in
project management and in gathering analytics on how accessible Web
sites are.
One of our takeaways from the meeting was to invite some project
managers to our next meeting to talk about successful ways they have
incorporated accessibility into the project development cycle. Lisa
Caid has already arranged for one person, Jeff Kline, to join us at
our next meeting so we can ask him questions about these topics. Jeff
is the author of the book Strategic IT Accessibility: Enabling the
Organization.
Someone else said they might have someone who could join us too but I
don't seem to have who that was in my notes. If you had volunteered to
have a project manager join us please let me know if you have been
able to make any arrangements.
Having Jeff come to our next meeting will be great. I'll send out some
more information about it shortly.
Thanks....

Hi everyone,
Thank you for the session the first week of March, it was very helpful. I know many of you are meeting in Chicago at Midwest Educause Regional conference, so I hope this request isn't overloading you in any way.
CU Boulder is currently engaged in an accessibility of IT study for our entire campus, involving representatives from all over campus, system, legal, procurement. As part of the study, the University is seeking the perspectives of peer institutions across the country regarding current practices and priorities for improvements. We would like to have our contracted research group, National Research Center (NRC), interview about 16 Universities using the attached questions "Interview questions March 2013.docx". We need your help! It is often difficult to find the appropriate person that could answer these questions, so I am asking if you are willing to be interviewed, and...

Hello,
I was wondering if anyone is aware of a directory/listing of Accessibility Consultants that work specifically in Electronic and Information Technology. I ran across http://www.naaconline.org but this seems to be engineers, architects, etc. for physical spaces (ADAAG type of work) not EIT.
Thanks in advance,

HI All - I sent this draft of possible accessibility questions to add to the
EDUCAUSE Core Data questions. I have not approached EDUCAUSE core data staff
yet about this. We could discuss this document. At the last call we thought
that adding accessibility questions to the core data survey would be good.
Do we still think this is a good idea? Also, this document is too long.
Thanks.

Hi All,
This is a reminder of our regular monthly teleconference for the
Accessibility Constituent Group tomorrow.
Date: Wednesday, December 5
Time: 1pm Eastern, noon Central, 11am Mountain, 10am Pacific
Dial: 1.877.944.2300 with code 99228#
We have a few agenda items stemming from our discussion at the annual meeting.
Agenda
1. Working with other Constituent Groups. Some CGs want to learn more
about how accessibility impacts their area. The Blended Learning CG
has approached us and is interested in this. Their leaders would like
to set something up. We just need to figure out the best way to
facilitate this. I would like to discuss how we think we can most
effectively do this.
2. EDUCAUSE Core Data Survey. We discussed trying to get some
accessibility questions put into the Core Data Survey that EDUCAUSE
publishes. This would give a good metric for measuring how some
campuses are handling accessibility. I've begun to talk to them about
this and they seem open to the idea. At...

I would recommend joining and following the discussions on Google's own Accessibility listserv, https://groups.google.com/forum/?hl=en&fromgroups#!forum/accessible.
There is QUITE A BIT of discussion around the lack of accessibility to many of Google's products, though the focus tends to be on sight-based accessibility, from both the participants and the Google staff.
As a speech recognition user (i.e. Dragon NaturallySpeaking), I can attest that Google applications such as Chrome and Google Docs are completely inaccessible to me – they don't even recognize the existence of my Dragon NaturallySpeaking, there is no reaction
at all when I speak. I recently asked on the listserv about accessibility of the new Google Chrome lap top computers and their compatibility with...

Hi,
I was wondering if any institution would be willing to share what their remediation budget is for Accessibility (particularly for the accessibility of technology), assuming they have one (and if you have one, what’s the size of your institution?). If you have a remediation budget, does it include web sites, web applications (including course registration and LMS), instructional materials, learning spaces (classrooms & labs), and other items, or is it relegated to just one or two (such as web sites and computer labs)?
Thanks,

Hi All,
Attached are minutes from the IT Accessibility Constituent Group
annual face-to-face meeting, held at the EDUCAUSE national conference
in Denver a few weeks ago. There were 22 people at the meeting and we
had some great discussion focusing largely on activities, next steps,
and future directions for this group. The group is much larger than
that number would suggest: We currently have 312 subscribers on this
list (up from 264 this time last year). For those of you who were
unable to attend the meeting, please feel free to share your thoughts
about any of the topics discussed, or any other thoughts about what
you'd like to see from this group.
At the meeting I announced that after serving as group leader since
2007, I would be stepping aside and Greg Kraus of North Carolina State
University would be stepping into that role. Greg's been active in the
IT accessibility space for many years, both as a vendor and a
University IT Accessibility Coordinator, and has been an active...

Is anyone aware of any accessibility issues with these products? At one point they had a VPAT on Google Earth, but the URL is no longer valid. Hi,
We’re in the process of writing up standards for computer labs, and the question was raised “Is it accessible to designate which workstations are the accessible workstations, just like is done in parking lots?”
Some accessibility software is in the base image, so a student can go to any workstation in the lab and use items like ZoomText and Read&Write Gold. However, some software/hardware is workstation specific. Is it acceptable to have a sign (international symbol) to indicate the workstations with AT on them? Would it be better to have some other indication (a universal indicator across all computer labs such as an orange dot on the monitor and a tactile marker on the corner of the desk), so that the people with disabilities...

Hi All,
The deadline for EDUCAUSE 2012 conference proposals is rapidly
approaching (Tuesday February 21).
The past few years the IT Accessibility Constituent Group has served
as a catalyst for organizing and promoting accessibility-related
sessions. With this post I'm hoping to get that process started again
this year. Here are a few questions to get the conversation started:
1. Who on this list is planning to attend EDUCAUSE 2012, and plans to
submit a proposal on an accessibility-related topic?
2. If you don't have a specific plan yet, but would like to be part of
a collaborative proposal, what sort of proposal would you be
interested in, and on what topic?
Here's the Call For Proposals:
http://www.educause.edu/E2012/CFP
Note that "Universal Design/Accessibility" is one of the conference
themes, and that EDUCAUSE seems to be deliberately flexible regarding
session format (...

Thanks Jon for your edits to the 8 questions for the poster.
I've attached another draft, with a few minor edits to the questions
themselves. One change of particular note though is the title.
Originally it was "8 Great Questions to Ask About Making Content
Accessible". You changed that to "8 Great Questions to Ask Vendors
About Accessibility". While I agree that we'd like these eight
questions to be something attendees can talk with vendors about, I
think these questions also have broad applicability - they apply to
vendors, but not exclusively to vendors. So, I changed the title to
the more general "8 Great Questions to Ask About IT Accessibility". A
nice side effect is this title is shorter and fits on two lines rather
than three, which makes all the content fit a little better.
Thoughts? Feedback? Additional edits?
Thanks,
Terrill

Hi -
I asked this question in today's meeting, but want to repeat it in case those who didn't attend might have some input.
At PCC we check each new online course to make sure it meets WCAG 2.0 AA standards. But we have 1900 existing courses that never were checked. We want to bring those courses up to WCAG 2.0 AA standards too. Does anyone have a process that they used or are using to bring existing online courses up to accessibility standards?
DeVry folks were very helpful in today's meeting sharing their process. Guys from DeVry, if you would be so kind as to share with the group again on the listserv or send me your email addresses so I can ask you a few more questions, that would be awesome! I'd love it if you wanted to share your checklist. And did you use any software to do the initial accessibility analysis reports that you sent to deans?

1. Our annual constituent group meeting is scheduled for Thursday

emerging issues related to IT accessibility and to share strategies
and best practices. It usually works well to have an open agenda, but
if anyone has specific topics they'd like to explore during this time,
please let me know.
2. EDUCAUSE is planning to have a theater on the exhibit hall floor

open to input from us. Any ideas?

Hi All,
We spent much of the Constituent Group meeting today talking about
this issue, so I thought I'd take a moment to report out from that
discussion.
California State University's Accessible Technology Initiative seems
to have had some success in this area. By refusing to purchase certain
learning management systems due to their accessibility problem, CSU
stimulated at least a couple of those vendors, Blackboard and
Desire2Learn, into action to improve their accessibility. CSU had
similar positive effect with Apple regarding iTunesU. There was no one
from CSU on the call, but others noted that CSU's success was as much
about collaborating with the vendors and being willing to share their
expertise as it was about refusing to purchase.
That said, it still seems to be imperative that vendors have a
business incentive for creating accessible products. By including
accessibility in RFP's, and demanding that accessibility problems be
addressed as a condition of purchase, we can...

I'm kicking off a project to improve accessibility of our A/V control systems, especially touch panel interfaces.
Any resources or lessons learned from your own experience would be appreciated.

Hello all,
Hopefully someone on this list can help me out. We are in need of setting up a testing room that will contain a computer that has adaptive technologies on it (which we already have), but the caveat is that we need to be able to provide internet when allowed and disable it when it is not. Is there anything out there, short of disabling the port on the switch or removing the network cable, that will allow this to happen? Thanks in advance for your responses.
