Hi All, After talking with EDUCAUSE we have two good options for moving forward with this type of training. 1. We can do it like we did with the Blended and Online Learning CG and do a lot of it on our own, but EDUCAUSE would help promote it. EDUCAUSE would also be able to provide their Adobe Connect room for it. 2. We can do it as part of EDUCAUSE's regularly scheduled EDUCAUSE Live! series. Here EDUCAUSE would also promote it plus provide technical assistance for the presentation along with using their Adobe Connect room. The next available slot for this is Nov 20. I wanted to get some input from people on which way they would prefer. At first the Nov 20 date seemed to far away to me, but in reality I don't know if we could pull all of this together much before then anyways. With summer schedules it would probably be at least September before we could do it anyways. Another possibility is using the Learning Theater at the EDUCAUSE National Conference for a presentation. If you...

Here is EDUCAUSE's annual list of top 10 IT issues. http://www.educause.edu/ero/article/top-ten-it-issues-2013-welcome-conne... While accessibility isn't mentioned I think it can be included in number 2, however, neither accessibility, usability, nor universal design is mentioned in regards to this. The notion of a "well designed course" is discussed, but accessibility considerations are not enumerated here. I think the challenge before us is to get everyone else to understand that a "well designed" course includes making an accessible course. I think accessibility has touch points elsewhere too, like "developing a staffing and organizational model to accommodate the changing IT environment" and "funding information technology strategically". Again though, accessibility is not...

Hi All, This is a reminder of our meeting today at 1:00PM Eastern. I have not received any agenda items, so here is what I propose 1. Hear plans for how EDUCAUSE is changing the Regional conferences. 2. General Q&A that people have about accessibility - bring your questions and let the group answer them. I also wanted to update you on the conversations that started on the CIO list about accessibility. There was not a lot of followup discussion but there was some interest expressed for an accessibility overview for CIOs. I am talking to EDUCAUSE staff about how we might best be able to facilitate this through EDUCAUSE channels. The idea has been well received so far, but I don't have any further details at this point. I will need to leave the meeting early, so I will plan on talking about the EDUCAUSE Regional conferences first then transition to the Q&A. Even after I leave though, questions can be asked and answers can be given. :) The connection information is as follows...

From the EDUCAUSE perspective, I've been talking with some of the EDUCAUSE leadership about the possibility of us doing some accessibility training specifically for CIOs. I don't have anything else to report on this yet as the discussions are just starting. We are looking at possible online training and/or an article for one of EDUCAUSE's publications. I have one overall question, and four general questions beyond that:

1)      Overall, given what you know about the accessibility of the product, would you recommend using Turnitin (or iThenticate)?

2)      Is the student interface accessible?

3)      If the student interface has some accessibility barriers, what accommodations does your institution provide (if any)?

4)      Is the instructor interface accessible?

5)      If the instructor interface...

Hi all, Sorry for the delay in getting these out. At the last meeting we mostly talked about finding out more information accessibility in project management and in gathering analytics on how accessible Web sites are. One of our takeaways from the meeting was to invite some project managers to our next meeting to talk about successful ways they have incorporated accessibility into the project development cycle. Lisa Caid has already arranged for one person, Jeff Kline, to join us at our next meeting so we can ask him questions about these topics. Jeff is the author of the book Strategic IT Accessibility: Enabling the Organization. Someone else said they might have someone who could join us too but I don't seem to have who that was in my notes. If you had volunteered to have a project manager join us please let me know if you have been able to make any arrangements. Having Jeff come to our next meeting will be great. I'll send out some more information about it shortly. Thanks....

Well done. I'm hopeful that this will start a few conversations and elevate this issue going forward as a higher priority with higher-ed IT.

Since vendor products, if not the biggest problem in general for accessibility, tend to be the hardest to remediate, I'll suggest adding something in the first set of (to what extent …) questions:

a. Requiring procurement and other IT sourcing personnel to be cognizant of accessibility issues and their legal implications.

Also, the first one, "Do not have an web accessibility policy", s/b 'a' rather than 'an.'

Thanks.

Hi All, The deadline for EDUCAUSE 2012 conference proposals is rapidly approaching (Tuesday February 21). The past few years the IT Accessibility Constituent Group has served as a catalyst for organizing and promoting accessibility-related sessions. With this post I'm hoping to get that process started again this year. Here are a few questions to get the conversation started: 1. Who on this list is planning to attend EDUCAUSE 2012, and plans to submit a proposal on an accessibility-related topic? 2. If you don't have a specific plan yet, but would like to be part of a collaborative proposal, what sort of proposal would you be interested in, and on what topic? Here's the Call For Proposals: http://www.educause.edu/E2012/CFP Note that "Universal Design/Accessibility" is one of the conference themes, and that EDUCAUSE seems to be deliberately flexible regarding session format (...

Thanks Jon for your edits to the 8 questions for the poster. I've attached another draft, with a few minor edits to the questions themselves. One change of particular note though is the title. Originally it was "8 Great Questions to Ask About Making Content Accessible". You changed that to "8 Great Questions to Ask Vendors About Accessibility". While I agree that we'd like these eight questions to be something attendees can talk with vendors about, I think these questions also have broad applicability - they apply to vendors, but not exclusively to vendors. So, I changed the title to the more general "8 Great Questions to Ask About IT Accessibility". A nice side effect is this title is shorter and fits on two lines rather than three, which makes all the content fit a little better. Thoughts? Feedback? Additional edits? Hi -
I asked this question in today's meeting, but want to repeat it in case those who didn't attend might have some input.
At PCC we check each new online course to make sure it meets WCAG 2.0 AA standards. But we have 1900 existing courses that never were checked. We want to bring those courses up to WCAG 2.0 AA standards too. Does anyone have a process that they used or are using to bring existing online courses up to accessibility standards?
DeVry folks were very helpful in today's meeting sharing their process. Guys from DeVry, if you would be so kind as to share with the group again on the listserv or send me your email addresses so I can ask you a few more questions, that would be awesome! I'd love it if you wanted to share your checklist. And did you use any software to do the initial accessibility analysis reports that you sent to deans?

* Core Data Questions Regarding Accessibility Judy Caruso brought together several potential questions, many drawn from the 2008 ATHEN Survey on Accessible Technology in Higher Education. For Core Data we will most likely only get a couple of questions in, probably around 5 at most. We all agreed that our questions should address the following issues. 1. Accessibility policies 2. What challenges do you face in implementing your accessibility policy? 3. Who is responsible for accessibility? 4. How many resources (FTE) are dedicated to accessibility? 5. What type of resources are available to your campus in making an accessible environment? We also felt that in forming questions we should be asking ourselves 1. What do we really want to know from institutions? 2. What do we want to have happen by virtue of collecting this data? We decided to form a small group to refine the questions Judy worked on. This will be presented back out to the group for discussion at the February meeting...

It usually works well to have an open agenda, but if anyone has specific topics they'd like to explore during this time, please let me know. 2. I was wondering if any institution would be willing to share what their remediation budget is for Accessibility (particularly for the accessibility of technology), assuming they have one (and if you have one, what’s the size of your institution?).  If you have a remediation budget, does it include web sites, web applications (including course registration and LMS), instructional materials, learning spaces (classrooms & labs), and other items, or is it relegated to just one or two (such as web sites and computer labs)?
