Hi -
I asked this question in today's meeting, but want to repeat it in case those who didn't attend might have some input.
At PCC we check each new online course to make sure it meets WCAG 2.0 AA standards. But we have 1900 existing courses that never were checked. We want to bring those courses up to WCAG 2.0 AA standards too. Does anyone have a process that they used or are using to bring existing online courses up to accessibility standards?
DeVry folks were very helpful in today's meeting sharing their process. Guys from DeVry, if you would be so kind as to share with the group again on the listserv or send me your email addresses so I can ask you a few more questions, that would be awesome! I'd love it if you wanted to share your checklist. And did you use any software to do the initial accessibility analysis reports that you sent to deans?

I’m in a bit of a bind because there is a committee who tells me what to do on the homepage of our University, but they don’t know accessibility issues with the ideas they find on other websites. I’m trying to fight the battles I can fight, and I’m wondering if there is an issue with scrolling and marquees, for example the calendar on the bottom right of this page: http://www.tarleton.edu/index-scroll.html

Do you have any people on campus (students, faculty, or staff) that use screen readers or any other assistive technology devices? Ask them if they are having any issues with the page, and if so what.  Ask them to show you and document those problems as demonstrated.  This does not have to be YOUR battle.

Hi Karole, It may or may not help to ask the people who are attached to this scrolling calendar feature to demonstrate a few things, like how one pauses it without a mouse, or how mouse users can scroll up or down to find a specific date or event they're looking for. If these behaviors aren't possible, this feature seems to be of little value from my perspective. It's as much a usability problem as an accessibility problem. Users are impatient these days - they want information quickly, and the best way to attain that is to present the information in a way that allows users to control it. For the record, I don't think it poses much of a problem to screen reader users. I haven't tested it, but looking at the code, all of the events are accessible at all times - they're just changing their position on the screen, which screen readers don't care about. It would be better if the events were coded as a list, rather than just a bunch of
elements, because screen readers would then identify the number of items in the list, which is helpful information for the user. Also, it's nice that they have the "See all events" link beneath the calendar, so if somebody can't access or doesn't want to wait for the scrolling calendar, they can jump quickly to that other page where events are fairly well organized (on that page though, I think the date headings should be

I’m forwarding the link to our student disabilities coordinator who does have JAWS, but I’m not sure if there is really going to be as much of an issue with the screen reader as much as I figured there would be with keyboard access and low vision users dealing with scrolling content. I personally would avoid marquees at all cost, but I need the ammo to support my concern.

I personally do not like marquees or blinking text or blinking images.  I find movement of any kind very distracting but, again, it does not have to YOUR battle.   If it is about access for the students, then the student disabilities coordinator should become the champion, if there is an issue with either JAWS or keyboard access and low vision users.  Here, we have found that the ones listened to the most are the end users, not the IT area.
