To the Portals listserv,

The University of Minnesota is going to be moving to the PeopleSoft Enterprise Portal over the next couple of years. In addition to replacing our current myU portal (built in 2007 using the open source Metadot application) the new Enterprise Portal will incorporate elements of our One Stop site, which is where students go to register, take care of financial business, etc., as well as our HR Self Service applications, and other portal-like sites across the U of M system.

Needless to say, the finished product will have a huge number of stakeholders. The current myU portal is owned by one unit, the One Stop site is owned by another, HRSS is owned by another, etc. When all these elements are combined into a single application, who should the owner be? Is it necessary to designate a single owner, or could we set up ownership by a consortia?

We'd like to hear from you. How is governance of the portal managed at your institution?...

Hello everyone,

I work with York University in Toronto on portal projects, and I’m hoping to draw on some of your experience. (Hoping against hope that you have a little extra time right before the break!)

We’ve so far launched a student portal (my.yorku.ca) and a portal for prospects (myfuture.yorku.ca), both using Liferay Portal from www.liferay.com. We are now in the later stages of building an intranet for faculty and staff, also on Liferay. The student portals haven’t included any social features. For the staff and faculty portal, we are planning on introducing a few social/collaborative elements including:

Hi everyone,

We are looking for ideas for a lightweight course management/group tool.  We have a robust distance learning application from Desire to Learn, but many of our faculty have become accustomed to using Course Studio (available as part of the Luminis portal) for simple needs like storing files and emailing their students.

We are searching for a similar replacement tool we might offer and would like to hear what other schools are using.

Thanks,

I've been following the thread Observations from the Gartner portals conference with great interest and would like to know if anyone has, or is in the process, of pursuing a lean portal build in Drupal?

Since this idea is under consideration at our university, I recently watched a presentation from Cal State Monterey Bay, given at last week's at Drupalcon, on using Open Atrium to develop a campus intranet.  Open Atrium was originally marketed for project management and it's taken some tweaking for it to suit their needs.  The presentation is available at:  http://denver2012.drupal.org/program/sessions/open-atrium-dot-edu-open-atrium-campus-intranet and I would be very interested to hear the thoughts of this group.

I also recommend David Aponovich’s IT Meets the Empowered Marketer at #GartnerPCC. I think he did a good job summing up some of the conference’s key points about user experience.

At my university, well over 50% of students appear to have smart phones, and the percentage is probably growing rapidly. Soon I’ll bet almost all students will have a mobile phone.

If a portal has no mobile interface, is the product even worth it?

If you’re developing a new portal, should you start with a mobile interface? Worry about desktop functionality later? Yes, this treats desktop users as second class citizens, but who is the portal mainly for? Office users, or our customers (students)?

What are your thoughts?
