Increasing Portal Participation & Improvements Showcase

Bluefield State College has taken several steps in order to increase participation, enhance the user experience and improve  the overall functionality of their institution's portal. These improvements include deep links in self-service and pushing everything through the portal, such as administering faculty evaluations and distributing key codes. The institution has also integrated nearly all of their products with Microsoft® Active Directory. During this showcase Kim Reed, Administrative Applications Software Specialist at BSC, will discuss the process of building their...

Hello,

We are trying to integrate our Gmail (students, faculty & staff) into Luminis (currently 5.04). The issue we're having is that Luminis uses the 3rd party id as both the login name and gmail username. This mapping (login username = gmail username) is true for our faculty & staff, but not for the students (login username is not = to gmail username), so we have the integration working for the former, but not for the latter.

I'm wondering if there are any other schools out there that were in a similar situation, and how you went about resolving it. Any help/suggestions will be appreciated.

Thank you.

Hello,

We would like to beta-test our portal, but in order for testing to be effective, we feel the users should see their Gmail (that's what we have for both faculty, staff and students) on the live Gmail instance. The problem is that we don't want to switch our live Gmail over to Luminis's CAS for SSO yet.

Are there any other schools that might have been in the same dilemma and if so how did you deal with it?

Thank you.

At the Educause conference, I attended the CG meetings for portals and web.

At both meetings, the native mobile app vs. mobile web site dilemma came up. At the portals meeting, it was said that students strongly prefer native mobile apps. At the web professionals meeting, it was said that students really like mobile web sites.

How do you harmonize those remarkably different takes?

Hello,

We are on Luminis 5.04 and are planning to upgrade to 5.1. I would like to get your input on using the Luminis bundled CAS for all of our SSO.

I know some schools prefer using a standalone version of CAS. Any particular reason for this?

Do we need to set up another server for failover?

Any other thoughts or recommendations?

Hi all,

As promised I have the results of the survey we just conducted. Thanks to the 41 people who responded, I think we have a good mix and some interesting results.

I created a wiki page on the Educause site and attempted to upload the survey results but it bonked on me halfway thru and now won’t let me edit the page. As I sort thru who to contact (anyone know?) I’ve attached the two response files.

The Word doc contains the responses grouped together and the Excel has the individual responses including contact information.

Bon appetit.

Hi –

Thanks for your suggestions on questions to ask. I added most of them and generalized a few of the more detailed ones to keep as short as possible. Please take a moment to fill out the survey:

I will post two files when it’s done: a summary PDF report with the portal products plotted on a graph and a list of the responses, and a second Excel spreadsheet with individual responses containing contact info for each (if provided).

Hi all,

Thanks for those who attended our constituent group meeting in Anaheim last week. I thought we had some great conversation and I certainly learned a few things.

One of my tasks from that meeting was to organize a survey of this list regarding what portals are being used across institutions. I haven’t looked but I’m guessing Educause has a wiki or other publishing tool we can post the results to. I can post on my site if not.

I can keep the survey short and sweet and just ask the obvious question about what portal is everyone using, but we could also use this as an opportunity to ask some more details about how people are using it, if it’s a good investment, etc. Below are some questions I’ve come up. What else should we take...

To the Portals listserv,

The University of Minnesota is going to be moving to the PeopleSoft Enterprise Portal over the next couple of years. In addition to replacing our current myU portal (built in 2007 using the open source Metadot application) the new Enterprise Portal will incorporate elements of our One Stop site, which is where students go to register, take care of financial business, etc., as well as our HR Self Service applications, and other portal-like sites across the U of M system.

Needless to say, the finished product will have a huge number of stakeholders. The current myU portal is owned by one unit, the One Stop site is owned by another, HRSS is owned by another, etc. When all these elements are combined into a single application, who should the owner be? Is it necessary to designate a single owner, or could we set up ownership by a consortia?

We'd like to hear from you. How is governance of the portal managed at your institution?...

I've been following the thread Observations from the Gartner portals conference with great interest and would like to know if anyone has, or is in the process, of pursuing a lean portal build in Drupal?

Since this idea is under consideration at our university, I recently watched a presentation from Cal State Monterey Bay, given at last week's at Drupalcon, on using Open Atrium to develop a campus intranet.  Open Atrium was originally marketed for project management and it's taken some tweaking for it to suit their needs.  The presentation is available at:  http://denver2012.drupal.org/program/sessions/open-atrium-dot-edu-open-atrium-campus-intranet and I would be very interested to hear the thoughts of this group.

Many thanks,

At my university, well over 50% of students appear to have smart phones, and the percentage is probably growing rapidly. Soon I’ll bet almost all students will have a mobile phone.

If a portal has no mobile interface, is the product even worth it?

If you’re developing a new portal, should you start with a mobile interface? Worry about desktop functionality later? Yes, this treats desktop users as second class citizens, but who is the portal mainly for? Office users, or our customers (students)?

What are your thoughts?
