Hi all,

Thanks for those who attended our constituent group meeting in Anaheim last week. I thought we had some great conversation and I certainly learned a few things.

One of my tasks from that meeting was to organize a survey of this list regarding what portals are being used across institutions. I haven’t looked but I’m guessing Educause has a wiki or other publishing tool we can post the results to. I can post on my site if not.

I can keep the survey short and sweet and just ask the obvious question about what portal is everyone using, but we could also use this as an opportunity to ask some more details about how people are using it, if it’s a good investment, etc. Below are some questions I’ve come up. What else should we take inventory of?

1.       What portal product are you using? Choose more than one if you have to (checkbox) uPortal, Liferay, Drupal, Homegrown, Banner/SCT, PeopleSoft Oracle, SharePoint, Page o’ links, Other. [what else should we list here?]

2.       My greatest frustration with our portal is: (essay)

3.       The most useful thing we have in our portal is: (essay)

4.       In the next 2-4 years I see our portal doing/looking like: (essay)

5.       If you’d be willing to share your contact info so that others can follow up with your responses, fill out your name and contact info here (fill in).

Thanks.

Jameson,

This looks like a great start!  I’d consider adding a couple items:

·         We use CampusEAI, which seems pretty popular… maybe add that to the list of portal products to select from.

·         Does your portal work effectively on a smart phone (or other mobile devices)? This could be a YES/NO or a list of check boxes where you list popular mobile devices like iPhone, Android, Windows Phones, Blackberry (well- maybe not so popular these days L).

·         Does your portal provide direct access to your student information system to pull/push data in real time? This could YES/NO or broken into two questions regarding read access and write access.

·         Are portlets on your portal transferable as mobile apps?

Good luck with the survey.

We use CampusEAI for our portal, and I’d be interested to hear who else does. I would also be interested in getting a sense of the effort estimate on internal resources being used at schools with a vendor solution, though I’m not sure exactly how this would be measured. The idea would be to get an understanding of whether a vendor solution generally turns out more efficient than a home-grown one for schools with limited resources, or whether it ends up using just about the same resources to customize it to the institution’s needs.

I might ask about recurring annual costs in licensing, professional services, in house staff hours, etc.

This is great and I can't wait to see the results.  Would be terrific if you can use a survey tool so that the data are easier to manipulate and play with.

Here's another question …

If you are currently investigating a replacement technology, please select:

(checkbox) uPortal, Liferay, CampusEAI, Drupal, Homegrown, Banner/SCT, PeopleSoft Oracle, SharePoint, Page o’ links, Other.

Perhaps some content information: - how many portlets - type of information: links, static content, personalized data, read/write capability - number of tabs/folders - can user customize layout? Audience information: - number of unique users - types of population (e.g., employees, students, applicants, public) - number of fine-grained groups/roles (e.g., advisors, instructors, department, major) Usage information: - number of logins - number of page views JimH on 10/24/2013 9:11 AM Jameson Watkins said the following: > Hi all, > > Thanks for those who attended our constituent group meeting in Anaheim last week.
