Banner workflow is rather limited -- almost legacy.  Very little extensability.  Development time is not short or easy.  We have been using it for some time at USU, primarily for travel and expense approval, but we ar finding it difficult or impossible to integrate the workflow into other applications or customize or exted it at all.  We are in RFP looking for other solutions better meet these needs:

  1. Capable of rapid development
  2. Easily maintainable (both overall toolset and individual processes)
  3. Reasonable timeframe to achieve proficiency with the toolset
  4. Capable of producing the following basic BPM components:  human facing forms, routing, email, approval, reports and connectors to existing USU systems.
  5. Ability to modify design of user interfaces to achieve USU look and feel (utilizing style sheets, templates, scripting, etc.)
  6. Customized components that can be easily reused in multiple processes, preventing duplicate work
  7. Initial and ongoing cost for licensing, maintenance, and customized support package for USU to include appropriate training, support and resources
  8. Provide available options to contract out process development as needed during high workload periods to augment our local development teams

Banner workflow doesn't meet our expectations in these areas.

Would be happy to provide you with our technical experts (not me) who can speak more directly to pros/cons if interested, drop me a note.

Hi Tim,

I am a former SunGard Higher Education employee of 28 years.  After leaving SGHE in 2006, I became an independent contractor.  My area of expertise is the Banner Workflow module. I have been working with the product for 15 years.  Prior to workflow, I was involved in Banner Student (admissions, recruiting, student) and Advancement products.

I have worked on workflow projects large and small across all the Banner modules.  I would appreciate a chance to speak to you about your business automation needs.  I have sent you an email with my contact information.

As a result of everyone’s answers it is apparent that Banner Workflow is a solid product, albeit sometime complex and mostly resource intensive.  Thanks for the input.

Tim
