Dennis,

We are in the planning stages of the Blackboard SIS integration and SP14 upgrade. Can you share your experience with this initiative?  We have a small IT shop and I am most interested on determining the skill set required to implement the SIS integration between Ellucian Banner ERP and hosted Blackboard Learn.

Thank you,

Iris

Iris,

We were fortunate to be hosted by Blackboard at the time that the snapshot process stopped working so they were very willing and able to help guide us through the changes required for SIS integration.  Like you, we are very small and have limited experience with Blackboard (much more with Banner J).  The requirement for us to migrate was the result of a new service pack (I can’t recall the number off hand).  What happened was that the course creation/management piece of the Banner/Blackboard sync started to work intermittently.  Some courses would not be created for no apparent reason.  The “fix” was to migrate that to SIS.

The files that we create to do the old Snapshot method required no changes, so that part of the integration was actually quite easy.  The hard part (though it wasn’t that hard) was doing the setup within Blackboard.  They will send you some good documentation.  We felt pretty confident after about two hours of playing around – but we were not ready to do it on our own.  We scheduled time with a Blackboard Help Desk person, who walked us through the setup via a web-ex session.  So in less than an hour, we were “good to go”.  I was surprised at how easy it was – but it still made me very nervous to do it. Currently we still use Snapshot for people and enrollment synchronization, but plan to migrate those to SIS over the summer.

If you have specific question feel free to contact me directly.  Good luck!

Dennis

Greetings,

Are others having issues, for the past two days, with their cloud-hosted Blackboard service? We are. We recently upgraded to SP14 over the holiday break.

Yesterday all of our courses disappeared for two hours!  We use a batch upload “snapshot” process  of small records containing student ID, course section, etc. and while the process appeared (from our side) to be OK there was an issue on the Blackboard side in processing it. When this process does not complete correctly we have seen in the past that some courses disappear.

We are also experiencing intermittent issues with Collaborate sessions appearing, or not, in some courses.

Blackboard is working on these issues but there is no resolution at this time.

We are wondering if others are experiencing similar or the same issues. Any information would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Tom

We are also hosted and we are not seeing any of these issues (and we suspect we would have heard if we were).

Tom,

I believe that Blackboard recommends the sis interface as the snapshot is soon to be obsolete (if not already).  We had trouble using snapshot for course management (it worked fine for enrollment and people management).  We had to switch to the sis interface to make it work.  We are being hosted by Blackboard as well.
