Here's a review link: http://www.greatboards.org/pubs/Board-Portal-Buying-Guide-final.pdf

The document reviews 4 different board packages.

We just did a review and it was very helpful.

Message from psb010@bucknell.edu

Mac,

We implemented BoardVantage earlier this year, and the Board is pleased with the functionality, especially with iPads.  We've already had 2 Board meeting since our implementation, and didn't print documents for these meetings.

Cheers,

We are using Passageways for a board portal after investigating the ones listed on the review below.  It was the only one that could do what we needed to deliver board materials electronically at the same cost as producing the materials in hard copy and mailing them out.  All the rest were way more expensive.  We have been using Passageways for over a year now and are satisfied with its performance after a few hiccups at the beginning.

We implemented Nasdaq's Directors Desk.  Our Board and the President's Cabinet both use it and like it a lot.  iPad app is easy to use and powerful.  http://www.directorsdesk.com/

When I did the reviews of available products, BoardVantage and BoardBooks were the most expensive - and from my perspective had less modern interfaces.  My personal experience was that BoardVantage was difficult to work with - from a customer services perspective.  Everyone's mileage will vary....

We evaluated BoardVantage, Directors Desk, BoardBooks, and BoardEffect last year;  we adopted BoardEffect a few months ago.  Trustee reaction has been very positive so far.  Would be happy to talk with you about costs/benefits offline.

Clearly a lot of folks are doing this. Can you share the rationale for investing in a system solely for the purpose of delivering documents to the board of trustees rather than using existing content management or other tools?

Thanks, Mara

At least some allow portal use for other internal governance groups.

Hi Mara-

We were interested in a portal for a few reasons:

1. The feature set includes things like voting, calendaring, iPad app, etc.
2. Online (esp. iPad) editing features were particularly desirable.
3. Having the portal in the cloud provides an excellent user training/support resource

The company is continually upgrading the portal feature set and the annual service cost (for an unlimited use license) was extremely low.

Marty

Thanks, Marty. I was just thinking that many of those tools are provided in broader platforms that could be deployed enterprise-wide rather than so board-specific. As long as there is appropriate levels of authentication and authorization.

Best, Mara

I think you're right about that Mara.  I know that many schools are using existing platforms for this purpose.  We considered using our LMS but decided that the "custom" fit of the board portal might be friendlier for trustees.  (Ironically, though, we are now looking at the possibility of using it for senior staff and some major committee.  Go figure….)
