Last year we were looking for a tool to help automate business processes and workflows. Many of you use tools built into your document management solution for that, but we don't have that implemented yet and it's not in our budget reality for the next couple of years. We picked a tool called ProcessMaker which looked like it would do the job, but have been having problems getting it to do what we want.

Are you using a (relatively inexpensive) tool for business process automation? What is it? What do you like about it? What don't you like about it?

Thanks for any input!!

Mark,

You might look at Bizagi.com.  I’ve not used their process automation tool, but have used and like their free process modeler.  Pricing seemed reasonable.

Hi Mark,

I noticed Siena is using both Banner and SharePoint.

As you have indicated you have to define your requirements.

If the workflow is routing Banner forms we have had success using SCT workflow.

If the workflow is associated with SharePoint documents, SharePoint has a workflow tool - that often requires custom programming - or Nintex has a very good product.

Richard,

Thanks for the suggestion! We'll check it out.

I've automated most of our campus with SharePoint document management, workflow (and to eliminate paper, InfoPath) and have been able to do all of our business departments over the last two years so it is fairly easy to create and implement highly tailored solutions. If you have SP in house already definitely make use of it instead of purchasing additional tools. If you need help fleshing it out let me know.
