I hope you had a great holiday season!  I wanted to give you a quick update on activities from The Center for Higher Education Chief Information Officer Studies (CHECS) (

CHECS has begun an exploratory collaboration with EDUCAUSE.  I believe this collaboration makes a great deal of sense and that it will benefit the higher education technology leadership profession.  EDUCAUSE Vice President Susan Grajek, Toby Sitko, Pam Arroway, Mark Sheehan and others at EDUCAUSE have been very helpful in providing feedback on the surveys used in the research.  I will be providing a copy of the reports to ECAR subscribers in 2012 and I will be presenting the results of the research at EDUCAUSE conferences.

The eighth iteration of the higher education chief information officer (CIO) survey will launch in late January 2012.  In 2011, 449 CIOs completed the survey and I hope we continue to see participation increase.   Also in January 2012, the fourth iteration of the higher education technology leadership survey will launch.  As you may know, this survey is for those in the next organizational layer down from the CIO.  If you know someone in one of these positions who is interested in completing the survey please ask them to contact me at and I will add them to the survey invitation list.

Thank you for your support of the research.  I could not complete this work without you.  I hope you have a Happy New Year and a great start to the second half of the academic year.

Wayne A. Brown, Ph.D.
