CIO Reporting Structure
My new president and I are having discussions about the best place for Information Technology to live in our organizational structure. Currently, central IT, centralized reporting, the web office, and institutional research all report to the VP of IT. The discussion is about to which officer the VP of IT should report. We are a small, liberal arts, primarily residential institution. I’ve already looked at some of the information in Educause’s Core Data Service to see where CIO’s report overall.
I’m curious if anyone would be willing to share any experiences they have had with changing reporting structures, the pros and/or cons of reporting to different officers (CEO, CAO, CFO, etc.) , or any wisdom that would be pertinent to the conversation I am having with my new president.
