We’re reviewing our disaster recovery plan at MCU and would like to understand where other institutions are regarding general data protection. If you wouldn’t mind, could you answer some of our questions below?  Keep in mind that we are a private university.

·         How do you prioritize your school’s data. Do you prioritize some as more important than others, or back up all data the same? We’re looking at grouping our systems based on importance. We would backup up and send offsite more often for the SIS and business systems, while keeping monitoring servers and less important systems backed up less often.

·         What are your recovery time objectives and retention periods you use for common systems, such as  student information system, file servers, email, etc.?  What did this conversation look like with your VP or governing body?

·         How many copies of offsite backups do you keep, and do you archive certain data to keep for longer than a year?

Thank you,
