All,

We have begun discussions on implementation of a data warehouse.  We are a Banner school.  As we begin our initial phase, I'd like to gather as much information as I can.  For those that have already done this, here are some questions that would help us on this initiative:
  • What company or consultant did you work with to implement your EDW?  Would you recommend them?
  • What do you use for ETL?
  • What reporting tools have you incorporated into your solution?
  • What would you do differently (lessons learned)?
Thanks,
Nathan

SUNY Cortland is just wrapping up our ODS and Argos reporting project set to go live next month, followed up quickly by EDW. I would be happy to share the project charter and other info. I have to dig up the charter but for the other items: * What company or consultant did you work with to implement your EDW? Would you recommend them? Ellucian, as with any Ellucian project it depends on the consultant we got, we have a few good and a few bad. * What do you use for ETL? Oracle warehouse builder, you get many ETLs with ODS/EDW from Ellucian. * What reporting tools have you incorporated into your solution? Evisions Argos, so far very happy with it. * What would you do differently (lessons learned)? There is going to be a huge learning curve for the Banner programmers to use ODS/EDW, a lot of reluctance to switch from Banner Tables to ODS then to EDW. Setting institutional expectation about where data will be reported from is important to do up front. We also uncovered a few political issues we are now going back and creating a data dictionary, so when we report on active students, for instance, we all know what that means and it does not very from school to school. This is going to be a long project, creating the dictionary, one that should have been going on in parallel to the data warehouse technical piece. _________________________________ Joshua Peluso 00' joshua.peluso@cortland.edu Director Systems Administration and Web Services SUNY Cortland Phone: 607-753-5617

I would like to echo my thanks as well – JCCC is also interested in this information.

Daniel,

We are a Banner school, and we have had a custom DW built with Oracle warehouse builder for several years. We use Cognos as our reporting tool.  We are currently in the process of implementing Informatica to replace the thousands of lines of PL-SQL code currently used for our ETL, to create a simplified data hub and more “real-time” data processing.  The Informatica implementation is more a replacement of our current architecture than a build from scratch, but I’d be willing to share the charter and other project documents if you are interested.

Thanks

David
