Hi all,

I feel so embarrassed to ask this.  I’m looking for a list of questions that you may have asked of your faculty regarding technology.

This request came from a faculty committee that wishes to survey the entire faculty.  They are unable to articulate a goal or objective for the survey.  I think they are interested to find out what faculty members think that they want or need to improve their ability to teach, whether it’s in the classroom or helping them prepare.  Pretty vague – I know. Sorry!

Dennis,

Each year I send a short survey to my faculty asking them to rate the IT support they receive from 1 – 5 in each of three areas:  Desktop Support, Classroom Technology Support, and Research Computing support.    I then follow up those three questions with 3 open ended questions asking them if there is any additional information they want to share on the level of service or additional resources they require for each of the 3 areas.  I then give them an option of keeping their responses anonymous.

I find the feedback I get invaluable.

Hope this helps,

-dave

I have learned that you never survey for trends but rather deficiencies. If Henry Ford surveyed what is the best way to move around the country, we would not have cars. If Lincoln surveyed his cabinet, we would be a split United States of America. If Steve Jobs surveyed what is computers used for, we would not have personal computers. We should survey what is not working well and how someone does something, but not what someone desires. As a leader, it is our job to look visualize what can be and work towards something that may not exist in your institution. Dennis,

As part of our strategic planning process last winter, we surveyed faculty on a variety of topics from what technologies they used (and why), to whether (and how) they publish electronically, to whether they are satisfied with our major IT services.  The results have been useful in a number of different ways.  You can see the survey and the summary results at:  http://www.swarthmore.edu/x32876.xml

Cheers,
Gayle
