FW: IT Staff Skill Evaluation
At UNSW – Australian Defence Force Academy we have got a list of all ICT Unit staff members and their respective skill set.
Each individual skill has a score (0 – 3), depending on the knowledge level of the individual. The staff skill set documentation (a simple spreadsheet at this stage) is updated through the year according to the training attended by each staff member.
The annual training program for each individual is developed at the beginning of the year based on needs to extend existing skill sets and develop new ones (e.g. due to new projects, system upgrades, increase in seniority of staff, etc) – we name it “Professional Development Plan (PDP)”.
Each PDP is developed based on the individual annual Key Performance Targets (KPTs), developed following the teams priorities aligned with the direct supervisor’s KPTs, organisational and ICT unit’s strategies (reviewed on an annual basis).
I have implemented similar framework and processes in my previous incarnations as CIO in the private and public sector in Australia, and it has always ensured cross skilling across ICT team members, alignment of the group’s skill set with the organisational strategies.
I am happy to share more information if any member of the list requires it.
Please feel free to contact me directly through my email address (n.braga@adfa.edu.au).

Subject: IT Staff Skill Evaluation
Hi All,
We are going through a reorganization of our IT division and along with that we would like to do a skill evaluation of our technical staff. We intend to create a professional development plan for each individual based on the current skill level.
Anyone done anything similar, are you willing to share your approach/methodology/templates/insights with us.
Thank you
Spalding
