We are considering subscribing to a research and consulting service. My earlier research (in 2010) showed that several schools use Gartner. I am conducting this informal poll to see if that is still true.

Please help me complete the following short poll (3 minutes or so). I will share the result with this group and I thank you in advance for your help.

Thank you to all who took time to help us out and complete the Gartner Survey. As promised, I have attached a copy of the result.

By a wide margin, most of the respondants subscribe to Gartner services (83%) , and  74% rate it at least 4 out of 5 on value.

You can find a copy of the full response (minus personal info) at this URL  https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Akt5aPj2xxD_dGdCb2pwdHRYQTdGLUdBY3dJT1A2OEE

Frequently it becomes necessary to evaluate and verify a potential vendors references as part of a formal solicitation or prior to engagement as a consultant.  I have found the typical reference check method to be a weak validation of a consultants competency.  What methods have you successfully used?  Have you hired a PI type to perform electronic snooping (data gathering) into your potential vendors financials, past performance, work load, successful projects (on time & w/in budget), staff qualifications, etc.?  We need better and maybe more sophisticated tools to help select our consulting partners.

Thank you for suggestions.  -  Scott Snedden, Senior Contracting Officer, University of Alaska

Scott,

I am not certain as a public institution we could  hire a PI type to snoop for us. I have, however, used Gartner to help me discover who could really deliver on goods named in a sales pitch.
