Our campus is a union shop and we always had a devil of a time adapting titles in a timely manner to fit the workload needed, so two years ago we stripped everything in IT down to four titles:

IT Technician (yea - I know - redundant)
IT Specialist
IT Analyst
IT Lead

We can then make team assignments without actually changing job title and those assignment designations go on business cards, etc.

The four titles are based on skills pervasive across the IT discipline: troubleshooting, team participation, team leadership, requirements analysis, systems analysis, etc.

We would catagorize the position you're describing as:

IT Analyst - Systems Team

John D.

Database Administrator is the title we are using as well.
