I'm helping a high school student (as a personal favor to a friend) who's name has unfortunately and incorrectly gotten associated with some bad internet sites.  We think her name was among a list of students originating from her high school (neither here nor there). She is fearful (and probably rightly so) that any college or job she applies to may google her name and see the results. Working with the search firms seems pointless until we attack the source of the problem.

Do any of you have any experience with reputation expunging sites like reputation.com , defendmyname.com and the rest? Any words of advice?

Thanks much.

Hi Dewitt, It is most unfortunate what happened to your friend and no I do not have any experience with these sites. I do have a question – which school are you from? I would recommend considering this first: http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2010/03/lifelock-accused-of-running-con-operation/

before  using any “reputation protection” service.
