Hi all,

Would anyone be willing to share the name of the software you are using to provide a campus-wide knowledge base?

Hosted (SaaS) or Installed? Purchased or Internally Developed?

Thank you!

Rick

We don't have a true knowledge-base but our MediaWiki instance (emu.edu/is/wiki) comes closest. -Ben (at Eastern Mennonite Univ.)

Right Answers.  We have a few components locally installed but it's more of a hybridized approach.

We use a hosted product called CustomAnswers  http://www.customanswers.com/

It has demonstrated excellent results in our Student Services area. Recommend it highly, and for those in Canada, it is hosted in Montreal.

We switched to Google Sites a little more than year ago and have been very happy.

We like the ability to include multiple document types and have them searchable.  The ease of use and searchability are what I hear mentioned most frequently.

(Note: the campus is all on Google Apps.)

BCIT uses Intelliresponse for our Registrar’s Office/Admissions knowledge base.  The tool provides the “one right” answer as opposed to a set of search engine results.  http://www.intelliresponse.com/  For Canadian schools, this is a Canadian hosted service in Toronto.

Indiana University has had an internally developed Knowledge Base for over twenty years. We're currently developing a replacement Knowledge Management System (KMS) and plan to migrate to it this fall. We're looking for partners to help contribute to future enhancements and would like to eventually offer it as a SaaS, or stand alone solution with a model of federated content which can be shared and crowd-source content creation across adopting institutions.

You can find out more about the existing Knowledge Base at https://kb.iu.edu/data/aovp.html and the Kuali Knowledge Management System (KMS) at https://kb.iu.edu/data/azgk.html.  Happy to discuss further with you, if you wish.

Hi Rick,

We have an internally develop Knowledge Base.  You can see it here:  http://kb.wisc.edu

It is used by both the central IT group as well as partners across campus.   We also host University of Chicago, UW Green Bay and Xavier University in our KB.

OTRS has a decent knowledge base engine (otrs.org), although we primarily use it for its ticketing system prowess.

Re. hosting, there are all kinds of options – they will host (too pricey for us), you can get a white box solution from vendors OTRS recommends (not a bad solution, IMHO), or, as is our case, simply host it on a virtual machine in our server room.

OTRS has been a rock solid product for us for the past 6+ years, and the customer service has always been outstanding.

We can chat offline – happy to lend our experience.
